A Journey of Transformation: From Local Champion to Global Player

Written on

Chapter 1: A Simple Life with Complex Thoughts

I am just an ordinary individual with a rather intricate way of thinking. My mind constantly tries to rhyme every word I hear. A true enthusiast of technology, I work as a Software Quality Advocate during the day. I also have a knack for humor—one of my fondest memories is when I roasted a friend so well that he ended up recording a diss track about me.

At 36, I am a Nigerian citizen currently residing in Ireland. I made the leap from Nigeria to pursue a graduate degree in my early thirties. Back home, I was quite content with my life, my career, and my financial situation. I was employed in the IT department of the largest e-commerce firm in West Africa before transitioning to a position at a bank’s headquarters. I was doing alright, but deep down, I yearned for more.

I felt like a big fish in a small pond and aspired to compete on a global scale. While I was involved in creating tech solutions for Nigerian consumers, my ambition was to develop products for a worldwide audience. To achieve this, I needed to interact with people from diverse backgrounds to understand their perspectives. Pursuing a Master’s degree abroad seemed to be the perfect gateway to fulfill this dream.

The decision to leave my job and everything I knew to start anew as a student in Europe was incredibly tough.

Change is daunting. Change is essential. Change is both frightening and fulfilling. ~Chris Compton

After nearly three years of saving, I had to defer my admission twice because I struggled to gather the funds while also managing my responsibilities back home. I sold my car, household items, and other possessions to fund my relocation.

Making significant life changes is challenging, but these sacrifices were vital for my transformation.

A few years later, I graduated, married, and now enjoy life in Ireland with my wife. I can confidently say that my current life far surpasses what I left behind, but it required considerable sacrifices and the courage to embrace change.

I transitioned from a stable office job to working late shifts in warehouses and ultimately joined a company focused on creating products for a global audience. This journey has allowed me to collaborate with individuals from all around the globe—America, China, Russia, India, Brazil, Poland—the list goes on. This has truly been a remarkable metamorphosis for me.

With a wealth of experiences that have shaped my unique outlook, I began seeking ways to share my story, which led me to write on Medium.

I aspire to make a living through my writing, primarily focusing on self-improvement, technology, and life experiences.

Have I penned any articles that went viral? Well, it depends on your definition of viral, but here are a few of my favorites:

  • What I Wish More People Knew About Being an Immigrant

They say home is where the heart is… but they were mistaken!

  • How Cultures Create Emotions

You might not share the same emotional experiences as individuals from different cultures.

  • Unusual Things You’re Totally Allowed To Do

You may not have even considered these possibilities.

  • 25 Uncommon Words To Level Up Your Vocabulary And Their Meanings

Including examples of how to use them in sentences.

I have also authored several books under the pen name Nda Esio, which I’m still figuring out how to market. Your support would mean a lot—check them out on Amazon Books.

I am happily married to my best friend, and we are celebrating two years together. We don’t have pets or children yet. Dubai holds a special place in my heart, and my contributions to Google Maps have amassed over 14 million views.

I believe it's perfectly fine to live with some fears unchallenged. Don’t misunderstand me; I’m quite adventurous and have taken on dares such as jumping off a bridge into a river or swimming in waters teeming with leeches. However, no amount of money can persuade me to ride those terrifying high-speed roller coasters or jump out of a plane. I’ve attempted both twice and have come to terms with my fear of heights and speed.

So, that sums up my story. It’s a pleasure to e-meet you!
