Embracing Life: The Journey of Growth After 60

Written on

Chapter 1: The Turning Point

Before hope fades and opportunities slip away, it’s essential to recognize that age shouldn't dictate our potential.

Lemmy Kilmister once expressed, "I don’t see why there should be a point where everyone decides you're too old. I'm not too old, and until I decide I’m too old, I’ll never be too old." This sentiment resonates with many as they face critical moments in life.

After weeks of hesitation, Sara, at 68, finally sought medical help. Struggling with diabetes, obesity, and cellulitis, she faced the stark reality that her current lifestyle could cut her life short. The doctor’s warning was clear: change was imperative for her to reach her 70th birthday.

Sara understood the gravity of her situation; she was responsible for her own change. Accepting a prescription for dietary consultation, she learned about Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT), a crucial step recommended by the American Diabetes Association, especially for the 27.2 million older adults grappling with pre-diabetes.

With resolve, she thanked her doctor, grabbed her cane, and left with a newfound determination.

This moment mirrors my own experience at 70, where I, too, faced my own crossroads—not of physical ailment, but of a promise made to myself decades earlier. It was a vow to pursue my passions and not allow age to hinder my aspirations.

I struggled against the voices in my head telling me I was too old to change. Yet, my inner self urged me to rise above and continue pursuing my dreams of developing health and personal growth programs that diverge from traditional education. My aim is to demonstrate to boomers what is still achievable, emphasizing the importance of understanding the principles of health to make informed choices.

Growing up in Norway and spending nearly 30 years in nursing at Northwell Health in New York equipped me with the expertise to inspire others. At 68, I enrolled in a master's program in Health Education and Human Behavior at the University of Florida, eager to cultivate my programs.

Despite being the oldest in my class and facing technological challenges, I persevered. A midterm exam required a 200-mile drive to campus due to my computer's limitations—a testament to my commitment to learning.

Ultimately, though I didn’t complete the program, I gained invaluable insights. At no point did I feel too old to learn or grow.

Aging can be an enriching experience if we resist the temptation of ageism. It’s crucial to understand that often, "We are not sick because we are old; we feel old because we are sick." This message is one I want to share with fellow boomers.

By shifting our mindset, we can embrace the aging process as a beautiful journey filled with wisdom and learning.

The first video titled "JAX - too young to be old [Official Visualizer]" encapsulates the spirit of resilience and vitality that resonates with our journey. It highlights the importance of embracing life at every age.

Chapter 2: The Power of Perspective

In her book Counter Clockwise, Harvard psychologist Ellen J. Langer discusses the negative stereotypes that often accompany aging. This mindset can lead to a self-fulfilling prophecy where older adults expect decline, thus interpreting their experiences through a lens of negativity.

By choosing to celebrate ourselves and pursue our dreams, we can redefine the aging process, enhancing our health and happiness. There’s no limit to what we can still achieve—be it learning to dance, writing a book, or starting a business.

The years between 60 and 90 can mirror those between 30 and 60 in terms of potential and opportunity.

On my 60th birthday, I attended a seminar on Medical Nutrition Therapy, which felt like a gift to my younger self—a commitment to lifelong learning. This seminar not only honored my past aspirations but equipped me with knowledge to better my health and that of others.

The MNT program provided Sara with strategies to inspire change, including daily exercises. Initially, she walked back and forth to her front door 15 times each day, gradually embracing a more active lifestyle as her health improved.

The journey of growth is a decision unique to each of us. As Dr. Langer notes, it’s vital to discern what is from what can be.

Writing about health has become my passion, and after much contemplation, I finally published my first story on Medium. This act signified a shift in my growth trajectory.

As I prepare to launch a newsletter this April—a project that has lingered in my mind for ages—I recognize that the difference between success and hesitation can be as slight as 1%.
