Transforming Your Thoughts: The Key to a Healthier You

Chapter 1: The Power of the Mind
Do you ever feel older than your years, even if your age says otherwise?
The belief that our thoughts can influence our physical state is both daunting and liberating. Are you anxious about the thoughts that occupy your mind? Many of these negative beliefs often originate from our formative years.
What childhood messages are currently holding you back?
In my previous article, I discussed a friend who felt “officially old” at 60, a sentiment echoed by many. Are you among them? I want to assure you that it’s never too late to reshape your thoughts and, in turn, transform your life.
The mind possesses incredible strength, as evidenced by the well-known placebo effect. You have the potential to rewire your brain. Previously, I shared psychological techniques that have helped me embrace my NEW YOUth.
If I can feel rejuvenated (and I genuinely do), so can you! I’m on a mission to make the latter half of my life the most fulfilling, and I invite you to join me… if you choose to.
I understand the struggle of grappling with negative thoughts, fear, and anxiety. In the past, the idea that my mind could influence my body was frightening. Now, it inspires me—and I want it to inspire you too.
As we navigate these tumultuous times, remember that you have control over yourself. By tapping into your inner strength, you can cultivate peace. You deserve to feel your best, and that journey begins with your own efforts. It’s simpler than you might imagine. I often share straightforward and practical strategies as we progress on this path of self-awareness.
The challenge lies in applying what you learn. Many resist changing their habits, feeling overwhelmed or simply too busy. Even those who consider themselves unstructured maintain some routines. By adopting healthier practices, you can lead a more joyful life.
Last week, I explored neuroplasticity and how it can make you feel younger. This week, let’s delve into epigenetics and how our behaviors and surroundings significantly impact our health. I will share some physical strategies that I implement.
For instance, diabetes might be a family trait, but so are the habits that contribute to it. Consider the following example of two twins raised in the same household. As adults, one maintained her childhood habits and suffered from family-related ailments, while the other opted for a healthier lifestyle and enjoyed better health.
Here are some physical practices I incorporate to foster my NEW YOUth:
- Nutrition: As Mark Hyman, M.D. states, food is indeed medicine. I have noticed significant improvements in my brain and body functions after changing my diet. Research suggests eliminating processed carbohydrates, gluten, and dairy, while favoring organic foods whenever possible. While this may seem restrictive, I’ve discovered freedom in how I feel and function. To me, food is fuel rather than entertainment.
- Celery Juice: For over two years, I have followed Anthony William's celery juice regimen. Seeking more energy, I was pleasantly surprised when my aches and pains vanished! Tight hips and psoas discomfort, which once plagued me, are no longer an issue—thanks to the anti-inflammatory effects of celery juice. This commitment has been well worth it!
- Sleep: Many underestimate the value of sleep. I now prioritize going to bed early and waking up with the sun. Previously, as a night owl, I’ve found that more daylight improves my mood. Sleep is vital for healing and cognitive clarity, and it shows on our faces. To feel younger, self-care is essential, and quality sleep is a key component.
- Nature: I cherish outdoor walks in all seasons. Connecting with nature brings immense joy, especially on lovely days. Many of us spend too much time indoors. Being active outside has numerous benefits, including a natural boost in vitamin D from just 20 minutes in the sun. I aim for at least an hour of walking each day, often accompanied by uplifting music or inspirational talks. Walking is a wonderful opportunity for self-reflection.
- Movement: Prolonged sitting can harm our long-term health. Although I work seated, I make it a point to stand and move as often as possible. Regular movement preserves mobility over time. If you often feel stiff after sitting for a while, it’s essential to stretch and move every hour.
- Footwear: Comfortable, supportive shoes are crucial. I recently discovered Skechers Cali sandals, which provide excellent cushioning and support, even after extensive walking. I highly recommend investing in quality footwear.
Incorporating these healthier practices into your daily life can transform your environment and, subsequently, your health. As Bruce Lipton’s research suggests, your genetics do not define your future.
What actions will you take this week to enhance your well-being? Remember, thoughts alone won’t suffice—taking action is essential. That’s one of the profound truths I’ve learned.
