Chapter 1: Behind the Scenes of Building a Business
Welcome to the journey of establishing a business from the ground up! This series, "From Scratch," invites you to witness the week-to-week progress and the lessons learned throughout this endeavor.
Like Attracts Like: Debunking the Myth
Many people believe in the adage that opposites attract, but is that really true? Let's examine this idea through a different lens.
For example, during the summer, I spotted a lone ant on a quest inside my home, likely searching for crumbs to bring back to its colony. My past encounters with ant infestations have made me less than fond of these creatures. After considering squashing the ant to prevent it from reporting back to its colony, I was dismayed to find a line of ants marching into my house later.
A little research revealed that when an ant dies, it releases pheromones that attract more ants. This notion parallels some of my learnings from pharmacy school about white blood cells: they send out signals to summon reinforcements during an infection. In both cases, like attracts like.
But when it comes to personal relationships, the idea of opposites attracting seems to prevail. If one is indeed the average of the five people they spend the most time with, doesn't that challenge the notion of opposites attracting? My own experience with my first girlfriend—who was outgoing while I was more reserved—illustrates this. While we had different personalities, our emotional and intellectual connections were very similar, suggesting that shared values and thoughts play a more significant role in attraction than mere personality differences.
Why am I emphasizing this idea? Because it highlights the impact of our thoughts. I have a family member who constantly complains about life, believing that voicing his frustrations will somehow lead to a better situation. Unfortunately, this negativity only attracts more unfavorable circumstances.
In my view, our thoughts shape our energy and vibrations. Negative thinking tends to attract more negativity, while a positive outlook can lead to positive experiences. I don't possess scientific evidence for this, but it’s a pattern I've observed consistently.
Recently, I faced some car troubles. Initially frustrated, I realized that the situation could have been worse. At least my car broke down in my driveway rather than far from home. This shift in perspective allowed me to manage my emotions and not let the mishap ruin my day.
