Rediscovering True Rest: The Path to Genuine Relaxation

Chapter 1: The Myth of Activity Change as Rest
Contrary to popular belief, the best kind of vacation does not stem from merely shifting activities. This idea, ingrained in us since childhood, suggests that changing what we do can serve as adequate rest. However, this is a misconception.
Many people flock to workshops to learn the art of doing nothing, yet we often associate rest with guilt, perceiving it as a loss of productivity. This mindset can lead to severe consequences: either physical ailments when the body can no longer cope, or psychological issues such as anxiety and depression.
The irony is that if you neglect to allow yourself time to recharge, your overall productivity will significantly diminish. Just as muscles grow during rest periods between workouts, our brains also require downtime to function optimally. Why then do we insist on overloading our minds with tasks every single day?
True rest is essential for replenishing our physical and mental resources. Simply switching from one task to another does not equate to a vacation; it's merely a change of scenery without genuine relaxation.
To truly rejuvenate, it’s crucial to give your mind a break. This means stepping away from planning, goal-setting, and work-related responsibilities—this applies beyond just professional obligations.
You might find yourself returning from a trip feeling more drained than before, as if you need another vacation. Often, this stems from a hectic itinerary filled with planning and site visits, rather than actual relaxation.
Start with small steps: designate a specific time each day for relaxation. Begin with an hour, and gradually aim for an entire day of rest each week.
This practice is something I learned from the Italians, where Sunday is universally observed as a day of rest. Shops and offices close, allowing families to spend quality time together, enjoy leisurely walks, or simply savor a cup of coffee—providing a much-needed pause for the mind and body.
