How Are Ocean Waves Created?

Before discussing the creation of square waves, it's essential to understand how standard waves form. These disturbances on the water's surface are most often caused by wind.

Surface waves arise at the boundary between water and air. When air moves across the water, a phenomenon known as Kelvin-Helmholtz instability occurs at the water's surface. This leads to turbulent disturbances and variations in pressure above the water, causing the water to rise locally. In these areas, the speed of air movement increases, resulting in a drop in pressure. This imbalance leads to the crest of the wave forming. Conversely, in the trough, the air slows and pressure rises, causing water particles to swirl and elevate the wave. Thus, the stronger the wind, the more intense the water's movement.

How Do Square Waves Form?

While typical waves are commonplace, square waves, or cross waves, are among nature's rarer spectacles. This term refers to the regular, square-like formations that appear on the water's surface, resulting from specific weather conditions.

Square waves develop when two weather systems interact. A shift in wind direction, such as that following a cold front, causes new waves to form on top of existing ones, which continue on their own paths. This overlap results in the distinct square patterns on the water.

It's important to note that square waves can occur in any season, making them particularly unpredictable and dangerous.

Square Waves: A Cautionary Sign

The presence of square waves should be interpreted as a warning. Despite their beauty, this phenomenon can be quite hazardous. Standard waves are already a significant threat to inexperienced swimmers and surfers; however, the overlapping nature of square waves can lead to even more unpredictable currents.

Within the squares formed by these waves, tearing currents arise, which can pose serious risks even to skilled swimmers and divers. Low waves can carry immense energy, and entering the water during square wave conditions is ill-advised. From the shore, these waves can be difficult to spot. Swimmers should always aim to swim parallel to the coastline if they find themselves in the vicinity of square waves.

Not only do square waves endanger individuals, but they also present challenges to vessels. Near the coast, fishing boats and yachts are particularly vulnerable, and the risk increases with distance from shore, even threatening larger ships.

When waves approach a vessel, captains typically angle the ship to navigate through turbulent waters. However, this strategy falters when waves come from multiple directions, complicating course adjustments and steering.

Where Can Square Waves Be Observed?

Square waves can appear wherever currents from different directions converge. They are often seen in the North Sea, where cold fronts are common, and also in the southwestern Pacific, particularly off the coast of New Zealand.

In addition, square waves can form in certain areas of Lake Baikal and in the Black Sea and Sea of Azov. However, the Atlantic Ocean, specifically near the western coast of France, remains the prime location for observing this natural wonder.

The Île de Ré, a small island measuring 30 kilometers in length and 5 kilometers in width, is a renowned tourist destination located north of the Pertuis d’Antioche strait, close to La Rochelle. While the island is famous for its sandy beaches and pleasant climate, it also boasts unique architecture and exquisite cuisine. Among its many attractions, square waves draw considerable attention.

The island's geographic position allows for the intersection of currents from various weather systems, leading to the formation of the impressive square wave patterns on the water's surface. These waves are often difficult to detect from the shore, but a hike up a nearby hill or the local lighthouse reveals their stunning appearance.

The dangers posed by square waves are highlighted by numerous shipwrecks that litter the ocean floor near Île de Ré. Coast guard operations are frequent in this area, as many individuals underestimate the power of nature, requiring rescue from the water by helicopter.
