A Fresh Era for Todoist: Embracing AI for Enhanced Productivity

Chapter 1: The Advent of AI in Todoist
In a landscape dominated by advancements in generative AI, Todoist has embarked on an exciting journey by integrating AI capabilities into its platform. Unlike many tools that focus solely on writing, Todoist is subtly incorporating AI features aimed at enhancing user experience. But what sets this AI apart?
Similar to other systems powered by OpenAI, Todoist leverages the capabilities of GPT-3—the latest trend in productivity technology that has been rapidly adopted by various tools such as Notion and Craft. As I noted in an article back in 2020, Todoist is evolving into a robust framework, with OpenAI serving as the innovative engine driving its capabilities.
The incorporation of artificial intelligence within Todoist feels distinctive, largely due to its inherent structure. This structural foundation empowers AI, including generative AI, to better understand contextual situations—a feat that may prove challenging for no-code tools to replicate effectively.
This organization facilitates three key stages of productivity AI evolution that I previously discussed on Medium. Envision the following:
- Organizing Your Day: Todoist can optimally arrange your tasks based on your typical usage patterns, energy levels, or external meetings, allowing you to adapt your schedule to your personal needs.
- Intelligent Recommendations: With a deeper understanding of your preferences, Todoist will suggest tasks that align more closely with your current context and workload.
- Automating Tasks: Imagine having smaller administrative tasks, taking just 10–15 minutes, completed for you. This could involve generating brief result pages within your Todoist cards that provide answers and potentially trigger actions outside the app (e.g., sending emails or sharing content).
Chapter 2: Enhancements in Workflow
In this era of technological innovation, Todoist is seizing the moment by rapidly introducing new features.
Among the notable changes is an improved system for managing habits. A few years back, such a development would have seemed unlikely for Todoist. However, the company is now accelerating its pace, embracing calculated risks as the market increasingly gravitates towards daily planning tools. With its recent updates, Todoist has a unique opportunity to re-establish its presence in 2023.
Additionally, they've introduced boards on the homepage—a feature long desired by the Todoist community, which significantly refreshes the overall appearance of the interface.
Chapter 3: Looking Ahead
I’m genuinely eager to see what 2023 holds for Todoist. The team appears more adaptable and open to innovation, while still maintaining the thoughtful energy that has long characterized their approach in the productivity sector.
I have a scheduled call with Amir, their CEO, in the coming weeks, and I’m looking forward to sharing updates on the progress of these exciting new features.
