Embrace Life Lessons Before Your Thirties: Key Insights

Chapter 1: Uncovering Life Lessons
Like many individuals, I believed I had a solid grasp on life by the time I hit thirty. However, reality proved me wrong! Life is full of surprises; one moment, everything might feel ideal, and the next, it can all unravel. Since the future is uncertain, being prepared for unexpected challenges is crucial.
Author C. JoyBell C. succinctly captures this sentiment:
“The only way we can live, is if we grow. The only way that we can grow is if we change. The only way that we can change is if we learn. The only way we can learn is if we are exposed. And the only way that we can become exposed is if we throw ourselves out into the open. Do it. Throw yourself.”
It wasn't until my third decade that I truly recognized the value of stepping outside my comfort zone. Below are five additional life lessons I wish I had grasped earlier, as life is akin to mathematics: “the sooner you learn these fundamentals, the smoother your journey becomes.”
Section 1.1: Career Transitions Know No Age Limits
One of my largest misconceptions was that career changes were only feasible in your twenties. I quickly learned otherwise. Many individuals embark on new professional paths later in life. I made my transition at thirty—after investing over $50,000 and earning a Master's in Engineering, I realized I was unfulfilled. Despite facing skepticism from friends and family, I refused to let their opinions dictate my choices.
For two years, I struggled financially as a writer. It was an incredibly challenging period, especially without a safety net. However, my belief in myself paid off, and within four months, I achieved a six-figure income. This experience highlighted the power of self-belief and following your passion, which can lead to unimaginable success.
“The most difficult thing is the decision to act. The rest is merely tenacity. The fears are paper tigers. You can do anything you decide to do. You can act to change and control your life; and the procedure, the process is its own reward.”
— Amelia Earhart
If you're dissatisfied with your career, don't hesitate to explore new avenues. It's never too late to reinvent yourself.
Section 1.2: Prioritize Your Happiness
People often have opinions about my appearance—some say I’m too thin, while others claim I look heavier if I gain weight. It’s impossible to please everyone, and your happiness should be your top priority.
Caring too much about others’ expectations can lead to burnout and distract you from what truly matters—yourself. I often sacrificed my own needs to accommodate others, resulting in low self-esteem and a lack of recognition. Now, I’ve learned to guard my time and energy more carefully. My self-worth is not tied to others’ validation, and I won't hesitate to say no, even to influential figures, if it jeopardizes my mental health.
Your happiness and peace of mind are your responsibilities. Attempting to control others’ feelings is misguided. Focus on your actions, thoughts, and the company you keep. By doing so, you will reclaim your sense of empowerment and agency in life.
Chapter 2: The Importance of Perspective
The first video, "7 LIFE LESSONS FROM MY 30s," discusses how life transforms during this decade, emphasizing the significance of embracing change and growth.
Section 2.1: The Illusion of Self-Importance
Daniel Kahneman wisely notes in "Thinking, Fast and Slow":
“Nothing in life is as important as you think it is, while you are thinking about it.”
Misunderstanding this statement can lead to overthinking and unnecessary stress. I once believed that everything revolved around me. If someone failed to return my call, I assumed it was due to their anger towards me. If I received a poor grade, I thought it was because the professor disliked me. Looking back, I realize how misguided this thinking was.
Recognizing that I am not the center of the universe has allowed me to focus on what truly matters, saving my mental energy.
The second video, "5 LIFE-CHANGING Lessons You MUST Learn Before It's Too Late," emphasizes the vital lessons that can lead to a more fulfilling life.
Section 2.2: Reframing Your Time Management
“I am busy” was a phrase I frequently used in my twenties to dodge unwanted commitments and opportunities. This falsehood became a mental barrier, preventing me from prioritizing self-care activities like exercise, cooking, or meditation.
Repetition of untruths can convince you they are reality—a phenomenon known as the "illusory truth effect." The key takeaway is that you always have time for what truly matters. If something is important to you, you will find a way to fit it into your schedule. Shift your language from "I am busy" to "I am focused," which can help clarify your priorities without self-deception.
Section 2.3: The Value of Spontaneity in Creativity
Oscar Wilde once stated, “Spontaneity is a meticulously prepared art.” Initially, I viewed creativity as simply generating clever ideas and executing them flawlessly. However, as I matured, I discovered that the most innovative ideas often arise from spontaneous moments and improvisation.
Being too rigid in your thinking can lead you to overlook significant opportunities. Embrace new ideas and be willing to experiment—if not now, when? You may regret letting a brilliant idea slip away while watching someone else succeed with it.
#Bonus: Defining Success on Your Terms
Success is a subjective concept, varying from person to person. For me, it means leading a fulfilling life filled with meaningful work and surrounded by loved ones. Others may define success in terms of wealth or fame.
“What matters most is how you define it and whether YOU are achieving it or not.”
Avoid comparing your journey to anyone else's; it’s like comparing apples to oranges. My understanding of success has evolved over time. Initially, I equated it with material possessions—owning a car, a house, or traveling first class. While these remain important, they are not the sole measures of a successful life.
