# Break Free from the Constraints of Others' Opinions and Embrace Yourself

Written on

Chapter 1: Understanding the Weight of External Opinions

The phrase "You should..." often makes me close off and tune out. It usually precedes judgments and opinions that can leave you feeling inadequate or guilty. There was a time when I let these "shoulds" dictate my thoughts, questioning my own understanding of what was right for me. However, I eventually asked myself: Why shouldn't I know what’s best for my own life?

Henry David Thoreau wisely remarked, “The mass of men lead lives of quiet desperation. What is called resignation is confirmed desperation.” In our most desperate moments, we often seek guidance from others. In today's world dominated by social media influencers, we gravitate toward voices that resonate with us. It’s easy to say, “That resonates with me,” but often I find myself questioning, “Is this truly right for me?”

I consider myself a skeptic, and life has taught me that there are always multiple perspectives on any issue. My curiosity drives me to seek the truth. In the past, I felt compelled to conform and gain acceptance from others, believing that their approval defined my worth.

However, facing my mortality forced me to confront the reality of my situation. I realized that my sense of control was an illusion, and I was left alone with my thoughts. At that moment, I recognized I alone had the power to decide what my beliefs should be. I had to define my identity, my desires, and what all of this truly meant.

True wisdom lies in acknowledging that none of us have all the answers. We each have a unique journey and perspective, often clouded by the limitations of our understanding.

Embrace your own identity and thoughts

Section 1.1: The Journey of Self-Discovery

Amid the confusion and uncertainty, I found a path leading me out of a state of complacency. I had to abandon the belief that anyone possessed the singular right answer. This realization prompted me to shield my mind and heart from the pervasive “shoulds.”

"Don't let anyone dictate your choices."

The myth that wisdom is found in isolation suggests that wise individuals are often alone, on mountaintops or in deserts. What I have come to understand is that truth emerges when we relinquish our need for comprehension.

Listening to the advice of others is perfectly acceptable; however, it becomes problematic when we accept their words as absolute truth without engaging in our own critical thinking. How much time do you dedicate to introspection?

The pandemic provided us with a rare opportunity—a chance to slow down, reflect, and spend time alone. What did you do with that time? While social media became our primary means of connection, many of us simply scrolled through feeds or took on distractions to fill the void.

One significant realization from my illness is that we are HUMAN BEINGS, not HUMAN DOINGS. When was the last time you paused to simply breathe and exist?

Section 1.2: The Importance of Self-Trust

The foundation of self-trust is self-awareness. Shakespeare once said, “To thine own self be true.” But how can you remain true to yourself if you lack self-knowledge?

A constant influx of others’ opinions can lead to a loss of self-identity. I often notice this in others when I ask, “So, tell me about yourself.” This simple question can reveal how well someone understands their own identity.

What do you consider yourself to be?

Someone once remarked, “It doesn’t matter what they call you; what matters is what you respond to.” I am not defined by my job title, my role in the family, or material possessions. Strip away those layers—who are you?

When you lack self-awareness, the opinions of others can become a lifeline. You may find yourself looking to others for validation, which can trap you in a cycle of dependence on their views.

When you possess a strong sense of self, no one can mislead you. You are only deceived when you accept what others want you to believe.

Chapter 2: Breaking the Chains of Social Conditioning

How many life decisions have you made based on others' opinions? We are raised in a society that influences our beliefs and thoughts, often without our conscious consent. Why do we cling to ideas that may not even be ours?

Seeking your own truths and validating your beliefs takes courage and honesty, which many of us tend to avoid.

Why are we apprehensive about revealing our true selves? Perhaps it’s because we fear rejection, and since we are all we have, we cling to the approval of others, remaining trapped by their opinions.

When you live for the applause of others, you become enslaved by their approval. When will you decide to applaud yourself and acknowledge, “I am doing my best”?

I cannot dictate what you should do; that’s a journey for you to discover. Once you find it, you’ll refuse to allow others to impose their “shoulds” on you again.

Take time for yourself.

Pause, breathe, and just exist.

Decide who you want to be.

Make choices based on your own desires.

Love the person you choose to become, unconditionally.

Allow those around you the same freedom.

In this way, we can all grow into something greater than we could ever achieve alone.
