In technical terms, it serves as my prototype for building a successful writing career.

It’s tempting to believe that emulating established writers is the shortcut to success. You might think that copying their articles will help you gain recognition. However, this is a misguided long-term strategy. Imitating someone else can be likened to impersonating a popular figure to impress a crush; it may work temporarily, but eventually, the truth will surface, revealing a lack of authenticity.

Rather than mimicking successful writers like Tim Denning or Sinem Günel, carve out your unique identity. Write honestly, express your genuine emotions, and allow your distinctive voice to shine through your work. Let readers connect with who you are—this is what will keep them engaged.

Building Community

If you want to thrive on Medium, one common pitfall is assuming that the platform is solely about you. It’s essential to set aside your ego and focus on the community around you. Instead of fixating solely on your writing, look outward. Building an audience is vital.

How can you cultivate this audience? By engaging with others! Read various articles, highlight your favorite parts, clap for them, and leave thoughtful comments. This interaction fosters community and encourages other writers to engage with your work in return. Authentic engagement is crucial—generic compliments won't cut it.

When you genuinely appreciate an article, express your thoughts and insights. Even if you disagree with an author's viewpoint, share your perspective respectfully. Medium is a space for learning and discussion, and differing opinions can lead to growth. Remember, meaningful engagement will attract genuine interest back to you.

Consistency

You’ve likely heard that “consistency is key” numerous times. If you want to build muscle, you must work out regularly. If you aim for good grades, consistent studying is essential. The same principle applies to writing.

To elevate your writing business, you need to write consistently. While quality is important, quantity plays a significant role too. You can spend countless hours perfecting a single article, but if no one reads it, those efforts will go unnoticed. Instead, focus on making a substantial impact through regular writing.

Don’t allow perfectionism to paralyze you. It can be challenging to silence your inner critic, but it’s a struggle worth undertaking. The more you write, the more you will improve. By establishing a consistent writing routine, you can increase the likelihood of your work being discovered.
