The Value of Dreams: Is the Journey Worth It?
Written on
Chapter 1: The Nature of Dreams
From childhood, we are filled with dreams about our future:
Who will we marry?
What career path will we choose?
What adventures await after bedtime?
These aspirations fuel our hope and inspire us to strive for growth, pushing us towards becoming the people we wish to be. Yet, as we grow older, many of these dreams can diminish. We often find ourselves consumed by daily obligations, relegating dreaming to a pastime only for the carefree.
In the video game 'The Artful Escape,' the main character, Francis Vendetti, finds himself sacrificing his own aspirations to meet the expectations of his small-town community, stepping into the role of his uncle, a famed folk musician. Yet, deep down, Francis craves to rock out instead of following in his uncle's footsteps. This raises a crucial question:
How can we dare to pursue our own dreams when we feel obligated to fulfill the dreams of others?
Francis' internal conflict struck a chord with me. Much like his desire to shred on his guitar, I have always yearned to write. However, self-doubt often held me back, leading me to rationalize my hesitation with thoughts such as:
"You're not a talented writer."
"Does anyone care about your perspective?"
"You should prioritize a stable job."
"You'll look foolish if you fail."
As a result, I tucked away my ambitions, fearful of the journey required to realize them. What if, at the end, there was nothing to show for my efforts? What if I squandered my life clinging to mere hope?
Section 1.1: Embracing the Journey
As I’ve matured — hopefully more like fine wine than old cheese! — I’ve come to understand that the emphasis should be on the journey rather than the destination. Taking meaningful steps in a direction that enriches my life is valuable, regardless of the outcome.
Just like Francis, who eventually learns to trust himself and discover his own voice after his cosmic adventure, I too am on a path of self-discovery. I have stopped restraining myself with a litany of "what-ifs" and have chosen not to let fear dictate my limitations. Instead, I am committed to living life on my own terms.
Section 1.2: The Power of Hope
Thus, I will persist —
I will continue to hope.
I will continue to dream.
I will savor the journey.
And regardless of where I may end up, I will be thankful that I didn’t spend my life standing still.
