Chapter 1 The Journey to Becoming a Great Writer

Writing effectively can often feel intimidating.

Initially, I absorbed every piece of advice available—saving countless articles, enrolling in email courses, and downloading numerous eBooks. Despite these efforts, I found it difficult to attract an audience. I felt like I was failing, overwhelmed by endless tips and plagued by self-doubt. I nearly gave up.

However, I stumbled upon a straightforward practice that revolutionized my writing and helped me gain 2,900 followers in no time. Today, I’m earning $300 monthly from my writing—a feat I once believed was out of reach. The best part? Anyone can achieve this.

The Surprising Reality of Learning

In today's world, competition for attention is fierce. To engage readers, it's not enough to be a competent writer; you must hone exceptional writing abilities. But how does one improve?

Across various fields, a recurring theme is evident: many individuals fail to act on their learning. Throughout my 30 years in coaching, I've repeatedly observed this. When asked to provide three concrete examples of improvement from a course, 95% of individuals struggle to respond. The issue is not a deficiency in knowledge, but rather a lack of application.

When I participated in my first writing course, I joined a Discord learning group. After completing the first module, I shared my insights and posted a piece based on a new idea. I received some positive feedback; however, many members did not share their work and several didn’t finish the course. We often underestimate the challenge of enhancing a skill.

Learning something new releases dopamine in your brain, leading to a paradox: you've already reaped a reward, which can diminish motivation to apply what you've learned. Conversely, putting new skills into practice does not provide an immediate dopamine boost—it requires hard work. This is why many enjoy reading about writing but feel immobilized when it comes to taking action.

The Simplest Path to Improvement

The encouraging news? You can become an excellent writer.

I transformed from an unnoticed writer to one who receives positive feedback on my courses. This change occurred when I adopted the 1% rule—a straightforward yet powerful strategy for improvement.

Here’s the concept: envision having $1 that grows by 1% each day. After a year, the common assumption might be $1.01 multiplied by 365, equating to $3.65. However, the actual amount is $37 due to compounding.

This principle indicates that each day’s 1% gain builds on the previous day’s improvement, resulting in exponential growth. Apply this to your writing, and over time, you will witness remarkable progress. If you enhance your skills by just 1% each day, you’ll be 37 times better after one year. Continue this practice for 30 years, and the results will be astronomical.

Implementing the 1% Rule:

  1. Select a Small Idea: Pick one manageable, actionable tip.
  2. Keep It Visible: Display a reminder where you can see it.
  3. Consistently Apply It: Use the tip in every writing session.
  4. Introduce a New Idea Monthly: Gradually add new techniques.

By following this approach for a year, you will significantly enhance your writing abilities.

The 1% rule is effective because improvements compound rather than merely adding up. Ten 1% enhancements do not just result in a 10% increase; they multiply exponentially. As you make small, consistent advancements, your writing will flourish.

Conclusion: Embrace the 1% Rule

Embracing the 1% rule paves the way for sustained excellence. You don't require dramatic changes—consistent, small improvements over time can yield incredible results. Keep in mind that most people won't take this path, giving you an advantage. Start implementing the 1% rule today and witness your writing evolve.
