Reflections on Life: The Dash Between Birth and Death

Chapter 1: The Meaning of Our Dash
The way we live our lives is often encapsulated in the metaphor of a "dash" between two dates—our birth and our death.
"When your eulogy is being delivered and the moments of your life are revisited, will you feel pride in what they say about how you utilized your dash?" — Linda Ellis
A vivid memory from my childhood comes to mind: my young cousin insisted on going to the park on a day off for his father. "I don’t have to do anything except pay taxes and die," my uncle quipped, half-jokingly, before conceding to take us. While this exchange lacked deep emotional weight, it has remained etched in my memory for nearly thirty years.
Reflecting on that moment now brings to light a fundamental reality we all face—death, and the taxes we pay while living. Although mortality can be a daunting thought, it is essential not to let it consume us.
As stated in Matthew 6:27, "Who among you can add a single hour to his life by worrying?"
Every individual yearns for a fulfilling life. We have but one opportunity to exist, and regardless of differing beliefs, it's clear that our physical forms are temporary. The Bible does not suggest we possess immortal bodies. Psalm 78:39 reminds us:
"For he remembered that they were but flesh; a wind that passeth away, and cometh not again."
With this understanding, our focus should be on seeking the Most High God and adhering to His commandments. Ultimately, our lives are condensed into the dates etched on our gravestones: the day we were born and the day we passed away. The dash in between represents our unique life narratives.
Instead of fixating on the limitations of our existence, we should strive to maximize our time on this earth, fulfilling our divine purpose. Ecclesiastes 12:13 emphasizes our duty:
"Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the whole duty of man."
We are creations of the Creator, and as children of light, our choices during our lifetime define our legacy. The en dash is not merely a punctuation mark; it symbolizes the spectrum of experiences that shape our lives.
The en dash on a gravestone encapsulates more than just the span of our lives; it encompasses the emotions, achievements, and trials we faced. It embodies our happiest moments and captures our deepest sorrows.
Each individual's story is unique, composed of personal experiences and viewpoints. The way we perceive our surroundings and the values we hold dear are all inscribed in that dash between our birth and death. The dash—it narrates our life story.
Wishing you long life, good health, and peace for you and your loved ones!
