Finding Balance: 10 Strategies for When Life Gets Chaotic
Written on
Chapter 1: Life's Constant Motion
Recently, my life has been a whirlwind of activity. For the past three months, I have been consistently on the go—whether it's training in Jiu-Jitsu, teaching seminars, competing, spending time with my girlfriend in San Diego, or traveling almost every weekend except for one. This pattern of relentless action is set to continue in the coming weeks.
Although I appreciate the opportunities this lifestyle brings, it doesn't necessarily come without its challenges. I often feel stress, fatigue, and overwhelm. Fortunately, I’ve developed effective methods to handle my stress.
Here are ten techniques I utilize to maintain my composure:
I Take Walks.
Walking is a simple yet effective tool for managing stress. When preparing for a BJJ tournament, I incorporate nightly walks into my routine. Sometimes, I listen to audiobooks, while other times, I simply enjoy the quietness around me. Regardless of the pace—whether it's brisk or leisurely—these walks help keep my anxiety in check.
I Engage in Jiu-Jitsu.
As expected, my love for Jiu-Jitsu plays a significant role in my life. However, it’s more than just a passion; it’s also my primary source of income. This duality can lead to stress, particularly regarding my performance and competition outcomes. Nonetheless, spending time in the gym for fun or exploring new places where no one recognizes me brings immense relief and joy.
I Sprint.
For many, practicing Jiu-Jitsu suffices as an outlet for anxiety, but for me, it’s not always enough. Intense sprinting sessions provide a much-needed release. There’s something incredibly grounding about a tough sprint workout that helps shift my perspective on life’s challenges. The physical exertion makes it difficult to focus on anything but catching my breath.
I Create Lists.
To-do lists have become essential in my life. My girlfriend introduced me to this practice, and it has transformed how I manage my weekly tasks. Whether it’s training, lifting, or even posting on social media, having a list keeps me organized during hectic times.
I Take Breaks.
With the demands of training, travel, and writing, it’s crucial to carve out time for genuine rest. When I feel overwhelmed, I don’t hesitate to take a day off. This might involve sleeping in, ordering comfort food, and indulging in a good movie—preferably a horror film for a bit of thrill.
I Practice Self-Compassion.
Given that I often face physical challenges, it’s vital to avoid being overly critical of myself. Some days are more productive than others, and that’s perfectly okay. When I recognize my limits, I can recover more effectively and be ready to tackle the next day.
I Cook Nourishing Meals.
Although I’m not a gourmet chef, I find joy in cooking. Preparing a meal for myself or loved ones is a fulfilling act that reinforces self-love. It’s a reminder that life has more to offer than stress and anxiety. The simple act of cooking becomes an essential way to care for myself.
I Listen to Music.
Music has the power to transport me back to various moments in my life. Different artists evoke memories that remind me of simpler or tougher times. These musical reflections bring me back to humility and help alleviate stress when life feels overwhelming.
I Prioritize Sleep.
Sleep is one of the most beneficial practices for my well-being. Since relocating to Austin, I’ve eliminated the need for an alarm clock, allowing my body to dictate its own rhythm. Prioritizing sleep enhances my productivity and overall happiness, making daily challenges much easier to navigate.
I Write My Thoughts.
Writing is a crucial outlet for understanding the world around me. Our reality is shaped by shared narratives, and I find it therapeutic to contribute my own stories. Embracing this creative process helps me make sense of my experiences, especially during uncertain times.
