Chapter 1: My Weight Loss Journey
“I want to lose weight!”
Does this sound familiar?
Many of us have experienced feelings of insecurity regarding our weight at some point. Some opted for gym workouts or sports, while others focused on clean eating. A few even counted calories meticulously to track their daily intake. Unfortunately, for some, these efforts yielded minimal results.
This narrative details my transformation from “Overweight” to “Healthy,” highlighting how my straightforward mentality and approach to weight loss have allowed me to maintain a healthy BMI to this day.
A decade ago, at the age of 20, I was carefree and indulged in food—lots of it!
At that time, it didn’t register that I weighed a staggering 89 kg, standing at approximately 174 cm tall. I was blissfully unaware of my situation.
Motivation to Change
In seven months, I was scheduled for National Service (NS) enlistment. The thought of the physical demands ahead prompted me to reflect on my fitness level. I was acutely aware of how much my fitter peers struggled during their service. Recognizing this, I knew that if I didn’t take action, my challenges would be far greater.
A Simple Mindset
To be frank, I wasn’t very knowledgeable about weight loss strategies back then. My only understanding revolved around my excessive food intake and the concept of jogging. I wasn’t interested in attaining a muscular physique; I simply wanted to shed weight through a controlled diet and consistent jogging. I avoided intricate calorie counts and complex gym routines.
My straightforward plan was as follows:
- Halve my food portions
- Jog 2.4 – 3 km six days a week
Seems simple, right?
Within a few weeks, I noticed positive changes; my weight decreased from 89 kg to 86 kg. This progress motivated me to push further, improving my speed and stamina, which felt exhilarating.
Five and a half months later, I weighed in at 72.5 kg, well within a healthy BMI range. A decade later, I'm pleased with my journey. I currently weigh 76 kg and feel content with my weight and running fitness. I run longer distances twice weekly and recently completed a half marathon in just over 2 hours—perhaps a tale for another time.
Upon reflecting on my weight loss methods, it became evident that my uncomplicated approach played a vital role. However, deeper introspection revealed that my obsession with maintaining my weight was the cornerstone of this personal triumph. The moment I lose that obsession, I risk slipping back to where I started.
What fuels your obsession?
