Embracing Goodness: Overcoming Resistance to Achieve Your Goals
Written on
Chapter 1: Understanding Conscience and Resistance
When we hear the phrase, "Where's your conscience?" it typically implies that someone has acted inappropriately or unethically. Conscience serves as our moral compass, helping us refrain from negative actions. While it may not eliminate harmful thoughts entirely, it aims to prevent those thoughts from escalating into behavior. Our conscience often voices reminders like:
- "Think about your family."
- "Consider the future."
- "You wouldn’t want to face the consequences."
Yes, go conscience!
However, what hinders us from pursuing good actions? Why do we often fail to act on our good intentions?
Section 1.1: The Nature of Resistance
Have you ever pondered what holds you back from doing good? Do you believe you effortlessly perform good deeds whenever they come to mind? If that were true, our world would be vastly different. There exists an unseen force that impedes our ability to do good—this force is known as resistance. Here’s how it manifests:
- "You can’t do that; no one will pay attention."
- "Really? That outfit? You can’t pull it off."
- "Everyone will mock you."
- "You’re unappealing, you’re broke, you’re both."
- "Just give up; no one will read your work."
- "You can do it tomorrow... and tomorrow... and tomorrow."
- "It won't compare to Mr. Beast’s videos; no one will care."
- "That’s too intimidating. You’re just one person. Stay silent."
Resistance often presents itself through self-doubt, procrastination, fear, perfectionism, and laziness.
Subsection 1.1.1: External Forces of Resistance
External resistance also plays a significant role. Consider the various external factors that can obstruct our efforts:
- Financial constraints
- Health issues
- Lack of industry connections
- Global conflicts
- Social media distractions
- Familial conflicts
- Criticism from peers
- Societal biases related to gender, race, or sexual orientation
And yes, let’s not overlook—DISTRACTIONS FROM SOCIAL MEDIA!
Section 1.2: The Dual Nature of Resistance
The unsettling reality of internal resistance is that it sounds exactly like your own voice. It’s an ever-present adversary, one you cannot escape from. Even if you isolate yourself from the world, this internal critic will always be there, perpetuating its narrative of limitation.
Internal resistance often feeds off external obstacles. When faced with an external barrier, internal resistance amplifies its viewpoint, reinforcing a sense of incapability. Even in an ideal environment where resources and support are abundant, the internal voice can still halt your progress.
Chapter 2: Confronting Internal Resistance
Internal resistance is the most significant hurdle we face. Many have navigated external challenges successfully, but overcoming internal resistance requires deeper introspection and effort.
If you believe there's something you cannot achieve, I invite you to reflect on whether resistance is the true barrier. For example:
- "I can't fly."
- While true in a literal sense, advancements like airplanes exist to help overcome this limitation.
- "I can't breathe underwater."
- With the right equipment, this too is possible.
- "I can’t be president."
- Yes, you can!
- "I can’t start a YouTube channel because I'm introverted."
- This belief, though common, illustrates how deeply resistance can affect our self-perception.
Consider the absurdity of someone who believes they cannot simply record a video stating, "Welcome to my YouTube channel. Today, we will be walking." There are countless channels that require minimal interaction, yet the belief in limitations persists.
Before declaring, "I can’t do this fulfilling activity," take a moment to identify the resistance at play.
Is it external? If so, can it be circumvented or managed? Or is it rooted in an internal belief that limits your potential?
