What's Inside My Bag: NYC Survival Essentials

Chapter 1: The Trend of Bag Reveals
I've become quite fascinated with the "what's in my bag" trend that has taken TikTok by storm. Long before it made its way to TikTok, Vogue used to showcase what celebrities carried in their purses, offering viewers a glimpse into their lives that was both intriguing and relatable. Celebrities, often perceived as distant figures, began to reveal the surprising items they carried, from multiple tubs of Aquaphor to sentimental trinkets they held dear.
While I've always found these celebrity insights entertaining, there's something particularly captivating about everyday people joining this trend. As someone who loves to be in the know, I relish the chance to peek into someone else's bag and, by extension, their life. What items do they cherish so much that they refuse to leave them behind? What essentials do they carry, even in a hefty 50-pound shoulder bag, come rain or shine? These are the thoughts I ponder, and today, I'm excited to share the contents of my (very large) bag that help me thrive in the hustle and bustle of NYC.
Section 1.1: My Must-Have Items
Lip Balm
When it comes to lip balm, one is simply not enough. I always make sure to carry at least three with me whenever I step out, and that’s a conservative estimate!
Subway Book
I make it a point to have a book for my subway rides. Currently, I'm diving into "How to Murder Your Life" by Cat Marnell during my daily commutes.
Loose Ibuprofen
Somehow, my ibuprofen always escapes from its container and ends up rolling around in my bag, gathering that mysterious dust that seems to cling to every purse. Interestingly, no one wants to borrow them, even when they’re in dire need of relief. Strange!
Pepper Spray
A fun tidbit: I’ve never used my pepper spray on anyone, but once, I accidentally sprayed myself while demonstrating how it works to my sister.
Sunglasses
I always keep a pair of sunglasses handy for sunny days and, on the rare occasion, when I feel the urge for a private tearful moment in public. They were especially useful when I first moved to NYC.
Eyeliner
In my experience, eyeliner is the quickest way to elevate your look and boost your confidence. If I need a little extra flair, I’ll find the nearest reflective surface and apply it until I achieve that effortlessly chic, yet slightly exhausted look.
Sample Perfumes
This is a non-negotiable for me. I dislike smelling unpleasant and enjoy having a variety of delightful scents to choose from.
AirPods
Essential for tuning out distractions.
Political Flyers
I can’t resist picking up flyers for psychics and various political candidates.
Everyday Essentials
Wallet, phone, ID, and the usual suspects. Yawn.
Thank you all for sticking with me through this little exploration of my bag! Sending virtual hugs your way. If you feel inclined, please share what unique or mundane items you carry daily. I promise, I’m genuinely curious!
