Transforming Daily Habits into a Bestselling Journal

Chapter 1: The Unexpected Journey Begins

In the summer of 2020, during a time when the world felt confined, I found myself contemplating how to navigate a weekend alone at home. Just months before, I had relocated 2,600 miles away from my family and friends, feeling optimistic about starting fresh in an unfamiliar place.

Initially, the move didn’t faze me; I had relocated for work in my twenties and knew the routine. I anticipated settling in, learning my way around, and eventually meeting new friends. However, this transition proved to be different.

In June 2019, I had driven cross-country with my dog and my girlfriend. She stayed for a few days before returning home, leaving me to adjust alone. Shortly after, I was assigned to travel to Tokyo for work, which meant I had just two weeks to find a home, care for my dog, and update my passport. The next six months were a whirlwind of travel, but each return home felt increasingly isolating. I'd pick up my dog and return to an empty apartment, devoid of local contacts or friends.

Fast forward to late February 2020: I was recovering from a severe illness I contracted during a work trip, just as news broke about the impending COVID-19 lockdown. With no chance to meet new people and limited social interaction, I felt the weight of solitude.

Chapter 2: Seizing the Opportunity in Isolation

Amidst the chaos of lockdown, I realized I had an unexpected wealth of time on my hands.

Calculating my hours, I found I had 67 hours each week that were unallocated. Initially, this felt like a prison sentence. But then, I recognized it as a unique opportunity to grow, learn, and connect with others online.

Taking Action

With this revelation, I took a proactive step. One Saturday morning in early summer, after completing my morning routine, I sat down with a Google Doc. I began writing about my experiences during this unprecedented time. I poured out my thoughts on the pandemic, my feelings of isolation, and the struggles faced by friends in the entertainment industry.

The act of writing felt liberating. It was like having a conversation with a therapist, except it was just me and a blank page. I titled my document "Summer 2020: 10 Week Writing Challenge."

Creating a Routine

I established two rules for this challenge: I had to write every morning for 10 weeks and be completely honest in my writing. The first rule emphasized the importance of consistency, while the second aimed to help me articulate my thoughts freely without self-censorship.

The first few days were challenging. I found myself constantly editing as I typed, which slowed my progress. However, I soon learned to let go of perfection and let my ideas flow. Within a week, I was writing a page daily, spending about 20-30 minutes each morning.

By week three, my writing sessions extended to 40-60 minutes, producing multiple pages. By the end of the challenge, I had written over 125 pages, equivalent to a book.

Chapter 3: Lessons Learned and the Road Ahead

The journey through my writing challenge taught me invaluable lessons:

  1. Adaptability in Difficult Times: Embrace change and look for opportunities even in challenging situations.
  2. Recognizing Opportunities: Identify and seize moments for personal growth, even in difficult circumstances.
  3. Building Consistency: Create manageable routines that evolve into strong habits.
  4. Growth Through Writing: Regular writing enhances creativity, productivity, and mental wellness.
  5. Achieving Goals: Break down your goals into smaller, actionable steps.

As I reflect on this process, I am grateful for the transformation that came from a simple daily practice. It ultimately led me to write and publish my first book in March 2021.
