Let's Talk About Sober Sex: Insights from Sarah Olsen's Workshop

Chapter 1: Entering the Conversation
Walking into a workshop focused on sex can be both thrilling and awkward. In my social circles, discussing such topics is often avoided, leading to blushing and discomfort when the subject arises. Thus, attending a gathering of sober women to engage in this dialogue felt like stepping into uncharted territory, yet the invitation was clearly felt by all.
The catalyst for this conversation was Sarah Olsen from Put it Down Lifestyle. Her vibrant and playful nature lit up the room, and she initiated the session with an icebreaker—a lively dance party. “Let’s talk about sex, baby. Let’s talk about you and me.” If you found yourself humming along, you were among 35 other women joyfully dancing at the "Sober Sex Chat" workshop during the Sober in the City event in Palm Springs, a Zero Proof Experience.
After shaking off the initial awkwardness with some dancing, Sarah guided us through our insecurities with an engaging presentation on the dynamics of sober sex. A few key points emerged:
- Alcohol has played a significant role in many women's sexual experiences, leading some to relearn how to initiate intimacy with their partners.
- Foreplay is often misunderstood. It's not just physical; it encompasses date nights and deep conversations that spark excitement—these moments create that tingly feeling.
- Open dialogue with your partner is essential. Whether it’s a matter of preference about timing or techniques, you won't know unless you discuss it. While it may not seem glamorous, this kind of honesty is vital.
- Seeking assistance to facilitate these conversations is crucial. Counselors and coaches can provide valuable support to help you communicate effectively.
- Shift your insecurities into curiosity and wonder. Approach this as if you're dating your partner anew—remember the fun and flirtation of that initial stage?
If you find yourself in a situation of discomfort or realization about your relationship post-sobriety, it might be time to reassess some connections. Acknowledging past experiences is part of the journey, but remember to practice self-compassion. You've evolved into a stronger, alcohol-free individual.
It's important to rediscover yourself. Confidence can flourish without the crutch of alcohol. While insecurity might still surface at times, owning your preferences and communicating them clearly to your partner sets the foundation for a fulfilling intimate life.

Chapter 2: Concluding the Workshop
Sexual discussions can often feel uncomfortable. However, after some laughter and candid sharing, Sarah Olsen helped create a safe space for the conversation to thrive.
Embarking on an alcohol-free journey means addressing various aspects of life, starting with building solid routines to avoid drinking. For many, the next hurdle is relearning social interactions, followed by nurturing relationships—especially with romantic partners.
Adopting an alcohol-free lifestyle is transformative and requires time for adjustment. This workshop shifted the perspective on discussing sex from something daunting to a possible and approachable topic, reshaping perceptions along the way.
