A Dystopian Tale of Pacemakers and Power: A Cautionary Fiction

Written on

The Rise of Wireless Pacemakers

In the wake of the 2023 Heart Rhythm conference, Abbott made headlines with its announcement of a groundbreaking wireless pacemaker. Shortly after, the company inundated medical publications and news outlets with reports highlighting defects in their earlier pacemaker models.

Patients who had received the older units, numbering around 745,000 globally, were urged to have their devices checked and replaced with the newer version at no charge. The reasoning provided was alarming: the existing pacemakers were susceptible to hacking.

As a response, the other leading manufacturers—Medtronic Plc, Boston Scientific Corporation, and Microsoft Scientific Corp—followed suit, initiating upgrades to the wireless model.

I recall my father’s inquiry regarding this new technology; I expressed my concerns but ultimately left the decision in his hands. The entire transition process took roughly three years.

With the rollout of the new technology, Abbott’s stock surged to unprecedented heights. As competitors lacked their own wireless devices, they turned to Abbott for the new model. This prompted lobbyists to push for regulations that would fortify Abbott’s market dominance.

As a substantial number of pacemaker users switched to the latest generation, media coverage began to spotlight the supposed risks associated with the older models. The growing alarm in the news cycle led to public outrage against a medical industry that had jeopardized lives with defective devices.

Eventually, the wireless pacemakers entirely supplanted their predecessors.

The Hidden Costs of Innovation

About six months post-transition, patients with the new devices began to receive bills. Initially modest, these charges were presented as a means for the company to monitor health and provide improved care.

The small fees were largely accepted by patients, who viewed them as a worthwhile investment for enhanced service and peace of mind. Pacemaker users often gathered to express appreciation for a corporation that seemed to be taking responsibility for its products.

However, aside from a few grumblings about rising costs, the public appeared unperturbed. After all, the company had expenses to cover.

A concerning increase in fatalities among new device users went largely unnoticed, primarily affecting poorer demographics and thus escaping significant media attention.

When a determined health correspondent from the Washington Post began to investigate these deaths—prompted by the loss of his brother—he faced resistance from his editors, who instructed him to abandon the inquiry.

Perplexed by their refusal to pursue what he believed was an important story, he continued his investigation in his own time. As he delved deeper, he uncovered a disturbing trend: the deceased patients were those unable to afford the monthly fees.

Realizing the gravity of his findings, he attempted to share this information with his publication, only to be dismissed and told to leave.

Shocked by the response, he sought solace in a bar, discussing the situation with a colleague. Upon returning home, he found his apartment ransacked, with all his research and laptop missing.

After reporting the incident to the police, who offered little hope of recovery, he reached out to other news outlets. Most were uninterested, and those that responded deemed his story unremarkable, suggesting he return with more substantial evidence.

Tragically, just days later, the reporter was discovered dead from an apparent heart attack—shocking his friends and family due to his youth and lack of prior health issues.

The Dangers of Corporate Control

The first video, Let You Break My Heart Again - Laufey & Philharmonia Orchestra (Official Audio), evokes themes of heartbreak and betrayal, mirroring the emotional turmoil faced by those affected by the new pacemaker technology.

In the second video, Cat Burns - live more & love more (lyric video), the emphasis is on resilience and hope, which starkly contrasts the ominous undertones of the story surrounding the pacemakers.
