Navigating Diet Choices in 2024: The Vegetarian Experience

Written on

Chapter 1: The Vegetarian Journey

As we enter 2024, I still encounter the same surprised expressions when I share my dietary choices. Surprisingly, it has little to do with what I actually eat.

In the early months of this year, I attended several tech events and reconnected with colleagues and acquaintances from the industry. During casual chats, I often find myself discussing my eating habits. When I mention that I’m vegetarian, I expect it to be clear enough; however, the reactions are almost always the same.

“What? You don’t eat meat?” is a common response. Then come the questions: “Where do you get your protein? How do you build muscle?” Only a handful of friends who have known me for years seem to understand my dietary choices without probing.

The disbelief, often mixed with a hint of disdain, is palpable on the faces of those unfamiliar with my lifestyle. Some of the more outrageous comments I’ve heard include: “Your testosterone levels must be really low; plant-based foods are high in estrogen and lack complete proteins.”

One of the more recent inquiries I received was, “Isn’t your life incredibly dull since you can’t eat anything?” Over time, I’ve learned to provide ready answers rather than delve into the reasons behind my choices.

Even when I share my journey toward weight loss and fitness, along with the various diets I’ve tried, the conversation typically shifts back to the same questions: “But how do you build muscle? Vegetables don’t have protein.”

The inevitable follow-up question is, “Do you eat eggs?” I usually respond with, “Occasionally.” This seems to satisfy them momentarily, as they acknowledge, “Well, at least eggs contain protein.”

And just like that, the intense questioning comes to a halt. In my mind, I reflect on my experience trying an egg-based diet, which left me feeling alarmingly unhealthy after two weeks of consuming six eggs daily.

I seldom initiate discussions about food or dietary habits, yet these topics seem to arise in every conversation I have. It’s frustrating to ponder how to respond when the dialogue inevitably turns into an interrogation filled with judgment.

It’s peculiar how people are often preoccupied with issues that don’t directly concern them—such as my dietary choices. I apologize if this comes off as a rant.

I genuinely have a passion for food and had a diverse palate before embracing a vegetarian lifestyle over the past seven years. I used to enjoy double cheeseburgers, cheesy fries, chicken biryani, murtabaks, roti john, minced meat noodles, and char siu buns, among other delicious dishes.

Who knows how my dietary preferences may evolve in the future?

What has your experience been like if you find yourself in a similar situation?

This narrative is not intended to critique which diet is superior or more appropriate. Everyone's background and culture shape their choices, and this is merely my personal experience.

Thank you for taking the time to read this! I wish you all the best on your journey toward health and fitness.
