The Surprising Economics of Monkeys and Their Unique Transactions

Written on

Chapter 1: The Concept of Money Among Monkeys

It’s amusing to consider the findings of a particular research study that explored the trading behaviors of Capuchin monkeys and their understanding of monetary concepts.

Historically, prostitution has been regarded as one of the oldest professions, a notion that seems almost instinctual. People have always harbored certain desires, a fact that extends beyond human behavior. Research indicates that even animals grasp the idea of transactional relationships involving sexual acts.

Section 1.1: Capuchin Monkeys and Their Learning Journey

In 2005, a groundbreaking study conducted by Yale, titled “How Basic Are Behavioral Biases? Evidence from Capuchin Monkey Trading Behavior,” was spearheaded by economist Keith Chen and psychologist Laurie Santos. The study aimed to educate monkeys about trading using a form of currency.

Initially, the monkeys were provided with tokens, which they learned to exchange for various treats like grapes, apples, and Jell-O. Over several months, these monkeys grasped the concept of these tokens as a medium of exchange, akin to money. The observations made afterward were quite remarkable...

Section 1.2: The Emergence of Prostitution

As part of the experiment, each of the seven monkeys was given 12 tokens, which they could use to buy food items at varying prices. Astonishingly, their behavior mirrored that of humans in economic contexts. As reported by ZME Science, researchers noted that the monkeys demonstrated budgeting skills.

When the price of Jell-O was lowered, the monkeys adjusted their purchases accordingly, illustrating economic principles similar to those observed in human behavior. Furthermore, once they were taught to gamble, they exhibited the same irrational decision-making patterns as human gamblers. According to Chen, the behavioral data from these monkeys made them statistically similar to many stock market investors.

However, a particularly intriguing finding emerged: these monkeys also engaged in sexual transactions. One researcher witnessed a monkey exchanging a token for sexual activity, followed by the payment recipient purchasing grapes afterward.

Chapter 2: Beyond Monkeys – The Penguin Parallel

The first video, "The Experiment That Taught Monkeys How to Use Money," delves deeper into how Capuchin monkeys learned about money and the implications of their behavior.

The second video, "Monkeys Pay for Sex After Learning to Use Money," explores the fascinating and unexpected aspects of their transactional relationships.

Interestingly, a similar phenomenon was documented in 1998 involving penguins. In this study, female penguins were observed engaging in sexual activities in exchange for stones, which are essential for nest building. This suggests that transactional sexual behavior is not solely a human construct but is also present within the animal kingdom.
