How Can Modern Men Afford to Date in 2023?

Written on

Chapter 1: The Cost of Dating Then and Now

A few times a month, my wife and I set aside an evening for "date night." This could involve dinner, a movie, or any enjoyable activity we both cherish. Reflecting on my own dating experiences from long ago, I realize how much has changed.

In high school during the early 1960s, a mere $5 could cover a half tank of gas, a drive-in movie, and snacks for both of us. This seems astonishingly cheap compared to today’s prices. Now, as we approach the latter half of 2023, I contemplate the financial burdens young couples face when attempting to build lasting romantic relationships.

Today's dating landscape demands a far greater financial commitment than it did in the 1960s. While relationships shouldn't hinge solely on a man's financial status, societal pressures often make it seem that way. Many individuals are attracted to what money can provide, and sometimes it becomes clear too late that the financial aspect is what draws them in.

The Dating Cost Is Relative

So, how does the $5 I spent back then compare to what it buys today? In 1965, that amount would equate to roughly $48.43 in today’s economy. It’s a stark reminder of how costs have escalated over the decades.

When I first started working, my hourly wage was about $1, which translates to approximately $9.75 today. This means that going on a single date would cost less than a full day's pay. However, if one were to date on multiple occasions in a weekend, the expenses could quickly escalate.

Living at Home: A Financial Advantage

During my high school years, I had few financial responsibilities. I lived at home, didn’t have a car payment, and my food expenses were minimal. In contrast, today’s college students often face various bills. While some may have credit cards or cars, dating becomes challenging when transportation relies on a bicycle.

Consider the costs: an $8 movie ticket plus $5-$6 for snacks. Even dining at an average restaurant can run between $30-$40, including tips. With a minimum wage of $8.10 an hour, finances can become tight, especially with hopes for a second date looming.

Final Thoughts on Dating Costs

As I approach nearly four decades of marriage, I can empathize with the difficulties young couples encounter today. If I had to start over, I doubt I would have the motivation to navigate the dating world again, especially with its associated costs. Yet, young love often leads to sacrifices, and it’s heartening to see millennials making those efforts.

It’s crucial for partners to consider each other’s financial situations without letting it dictate their willingness to continue dating. Thankfully, numerous enjoyable activities remain free or low-cost, like spending time at the beach or enjoying scenic views.

Perhaps future political candidates should advocate for reducing dating expenses through lower gas prices, higher minimum wages, or even a universal basic income. These issues could resonate with the younger demographic.

Despite the absence of discussions about raising wages to ease dating costs, it’s essential to consider whether dating leads to financial strain or if it reflects the depth of one’s feelings for their partner. While money can facilitate fun experiences, there's also value in simpler pleasures, like watching classic movies or sharing a jar of peanut butter.
