# 7 Low-Calorie Snacks That Aid in Weight Loss Journey
Written on
Chapter 1: My Weight Loss Transformation
I successfully shed some pounds, and a major factor in this achievement was learning to snack more wisely.
The Backstory
The year was 2023, and I had just stepped off the scale, feeling disheartened. My ongoing battle with weight had become an unending struggle—almost like a personal torment. I couldn't help but wonder if my punishment in the afterlife would involve a never-ending fight to lose weight.
Shaking off those negative thoughts, I made a renewed commitment to lose weight, marking my third attempt that year. I was confident I could reach my goal. While I wasn’t perfect, my lifestyle was fairly healthy. I consumed nutritious foods, exercised regularly, stayed hydrated, and got enough sleep. I also took frequent walks. But was there something I was overlooking?
Ah, yes! I needed to rethink my snacking habits.
The Temptation of Snacks
What is it about snacks that makes them so challenging to resist? There's always room for them, isn't there? Is it the sweetness, saltiness, or the oils? All of these play a role, but I believe there’s more to it—what I like to call the “mouthfeel.”
Snacks offer a unique texture that differs from regular meals—think crunchy, chewy, sticky, or crispy. That’s why even when I feel full, I still crave a snack. It’s that satisfying “nom, nom, nom” feeling.
However, this delightful mouthfeel comes with repercussions—visible ones, in fact. Days after my resolution, I found myself snacking in the middle of the night, prompting me to seek better alternatives. I took some time to brainstorm low-calorie snacks that became my go-tos. As 2023 comes to a close and I approach my target weight, I can confidently say these snacks made a significant difference.
If you’re hesitant to abandon cookies, candies, and muffins because you think there are no alternatives, you’ve come to the right place. Here are my seven favorite snacks that have aided my weight loss journey.
Fruits — Nature’s Snacks
Fruits come in an incredible variety—think oranges, strawberries, mangoes, watermelons, and more. They offer a delightful mix of flavors, from sweet to sour, and provide essential vitamins. Rather than reaching for sugary sodas, try snacking on real fruit instead.
Nuts — A Crunchy Delight
Nuts offer a broad selection—peanuts, cashews, almonds, and more. I love them because:
- They provide a satisfying crunch and savory flavor.
- They can be savored slowly, making them perfect for munching during a movie.
- They’re filling, especially when paired with tea. Forget biscuits; I’m starting a new trend of tea and nuts!
Dry Cereal
This option can be tricky, as many cereals are essentially glorified cookies. Yes, I’m suggesting that cereal isn’t the healthy breakfast you’ve always been told it is. However, when chosen wisely, dry cereal can make a great snack. I personally enjoy sugar-free muesli with dried cranberries, which also delivers that wonderful crunch.
Air Fried Wraps
This unconventional snack was a happy accident. I once overcooked a bread wrap in the air fryer, and it emerged crispy and delicious—like a giant tortilla chip. Just be careful not to overindulge!
Jerky
While traditional meat jerky can be high in sodium, I prefer making my own. I slice chicken breast into strips, season them, and air fry them until they’re chewy and flavorful.
Chewing Gum
This is the ultimate low-calorie snack that keeps your mouth busy. Plus, if you can master the popping technique, it’s a fun treat!
Small Portion Meal
Sometimes, what you need is a proper meal. It’s common to feel guilty about hunger after eating, but our bodies may require more—especially during certain times of the month. Instead of reaching for unhealthy snacks, consider a small, balanced meal.
