Insights from PR Expert Ann Noder: Keys to Success in PR

Understanding Media Dynamics

In order to excel in public relations, having a solid grasp of how the media operates is crucial. It’s important to stay updated on the news and to comprehend the various forms of media. Each platform, whether television, print, or online, has its own unique characteristics that influence how PR professionals interact with journalists. Do you know the distinction between an editor and a reporter? Understanding these dynamics is vital for any PR professional aiming to effectively connect with the media on behalf of their clients.

Have you watched the show Flack? Ever thought about a career in public relations? What does it take to excel in this field? In this interview series titled "5 Essentials for a Thriving Career in Public Relations," we’re engaging with accomplished publicists who share their experiences and insights.

As part of this series, I had the pleasure of speaking with Ann Noder, the founder and CEO of Pitch Public Relations, a prominent boutique agency specializing in national media outreach. Ann, a former TV news anchor, has a wealth of expertise in public relations.

Thank you for joining us today! I appreciate your busy schedule. Can you share what led you to pursue a career in this field?

After spending a decade as a TV news reporter and anchor in Oregon and Arizona, I transitioned to public relations in 2002. My background in journalism naturally paved the way for me to apply my media knowledge and skills in helping companies achieve editorial coverage.

Can you recount a particularly memorable experience since founding your company?

The most remarkable aspect has been our company's remarkable growth. What began as a one-woman operation has expanded to a team of over 20 professionals serving clients globally. Our reputation has become unparalleled, and we continue to thrive and grow as a leading agency.

What about a humorous mistake you made early on, and what lesson did you take from it?

While it may not be particularly funny, one important lesson was not to pretend to be someone you’re not. Pitch Public Relations is known for its relentless approach to securing media coverage for both startups and established brands. It’s tempting to alter your identity to attract clients, but that leads to failure. Instead, we position ourselves for success by collaborating with companies that align with what we can genuinely deliver.

What exciting projects are currently on your agenda?

We consistently focus on identifying timely story angles that resonate with our clients to secure significant features in top-tier publications. Additionally, we've expanded our services to include thought leadership and content placement for both B2B and B2C companies. It's thrilling to see many of our clients being acquired in substantial deals, as we enjoy helping startups grow into major brands like American Express, UPS, and JP Morgan.

As a successful leader, what three traits do you consider most essential for your success, and can you provide examples?

  1. Relentless: This trait is crucial in public relations, and I've had it from the start.
  2. Credible: This was vital during my journalism career and remains essential in PR, where trust is paramount for our clients and media contacts.
  3. Focused: We maintain a strong focus on our work, our passion for PR, and delivering results for our clients.

Now, let’s delve into the core of our conversation. For our readers, could you help clarify the various forms of PR?

Public relations encompasses a wide range of practices. Essentially, it involves managing and disseminating information from individuals or organizations to shape public perception. The differences arise in how these objectives are achieved. Our agency emphasizes media relations, focusing on securing editorial coverage through various platforms like magazines, newspapers, and online outlets. This can involve interviews with executives or providing content such as articles and reports. Other firms may prioritize messaging and strategy or social media engagement.

Where should someone interested in a PR career begin their education? Is a degree in communications or journalism necessary?

I believe the specific degree is less important than the skill set. To pursue a career in PR, one needs strong communication abilities, an understanding of media, critical thinking, creativity, and proficient writing skills. Degrees in journalism, public relations, communication, or marketing can certainly help develop these competencies.

You are recognized as a master networker. Could you share some tips for effective networking?

At Pitch Public Relations, our reputation is built on referrals rather than traditional networking. Our emphasis on achieving results for our clients fosters strong client retention and new business opportunities. Genuine connections should be mutually beneficial rather than purely transactional.

Generating qualified leads is vital for any business. What strategies do you employ to achieve this?

As I mentioned, we rely heavily on referrals. In our early days, we targeted companies with inherent media appeal, proactively reaching out to those we believed we could effectively represent.

Now, the pivotal question: Based on your experience, what are your "5 Essentials for a Successful Career in PR," and why? (Please provide examples for each.)

  1. Understanding Media Dynamics: It’s vital to consume news and understand the media landscape, including the nuances between different platforms, which shapes how PR professionals engage with journalists.
  2. Effective Communication: Avoid verbosity. Successful PR relies on clear, concise communication. Reporters are busy and want to know why they should care. Can you summarize your pitch in a few sentences?
  3. Persistence: "Persistence is in my PR DNA." It’s essential to be tenacious in public relations, balancing between being assertive and respectful with media contacts.
  4. Flexibility: Even the best-laid PR plans can go awry. Adapting to unforeseen circumstances is crucial in PR, so be prepared to pivot when necessary.
  5. A Higher Gear: Beyond understanding media and communicating effectively, a sense of urgency is essential in the fast-paced PR world. Are you willing to elevate your efforts?

Given your influential position, if you could inspire a movement for the greater good, what would it be? Your idea might spark something significant!

I don’t have a grand vision to change the world, but I believe kindness is often overlooked. If everyone practiced kindness daily, that could indeed be a powerful movement!

Thank you for sharing such meaningful insights!
