Five Essential Truths to Embrace for a Simpler Life

Chapter 1: Embracing Life's Realities
Reflecting on my early twenties, I find it amusing to recall the misconceptions I held about life and success. I once believed that obtaining a college degree would automatically lead to a well-paying job with stability (what a naive thought!). I thought people would readily assist me (not even close). I also assumed my youthful metabolism would last indefinitely (a laughable notion).
Now, as a father and having shared over a decade with my wife Kimi, I’ve built a successful six-figure business and immersed myself in countless books. I've navigated ups and downs, including weight fluctuations and losses of friendships, and I've even authored a few books. After facing significant setbacks, I can now share some valuable insights I’ve gained over the years.
No Shortcuts Exist—Embrace the Journey
"There are two kinds of people: those who do the work and those who take the credit. Strive to be in the first group; competition is less fierce there." - Indira Gandhi
This revelation isn’t glamorous; it’s a fundamental truth. Open any reputable self-help book, and you’ll find this wisdom echoed: there are no shortcuts. The effort you invest directly correlates to your outcomes. For two rigorous years during my Master's in psychology, I wrote essays week after week, without any means to bypass the hard work.
Don't squander your time searching for easy paths; recognize that diligence is the only route to achieving your goals.
Enjoyment is Key for Long-Term Success
Initially, I believed I had to force myself to hit the gym, eat healthily, and rise early to achieve my ambitions. Despite my aversion to exercise and nutritious food, I thought that was the only way to attain a fit physique. Yet, I learned that humans are inherently emotional, making decisions based on feelings rather than logic.
If you aspire to reach a goal, the process must be enjoyable. Without enjoyment, persistence wanes, and you’ll revert to old habits. I haven’t held a gym membership for years, yet I remain fit because I engage in activities I love—like sports and jogging with my dog and daughter.
People Care More About Their Needs Than Your Success
I once came across a story about a man choking in a restaurant. A frantic waiter called for help, and a college student stood up, claiming she was a hard worker. The waiter, desperate, asked if she could perform CPR. Her response? She could learn quickly but had no actual skills to help.
This encounter taught me a harsh truth: people are primarily concerned with what you can do for them, not your potential. Accepting this reality can reduce the friction you experience with those who fail to understand your value.
Hard Work is No Guarantee of Success
Transitioning to entrepreneurship taught me that effort does not always equate to success. I sought a system where greater effort would yield greater rewards. However, as an entrepreneur, I discovered that outcomes aren't always proportional to the effort invested. I dedicated months to launching a program, only for it to flop upon release.
While hard work is essential, it merely offers a chance at success; it doesn’t guarantee it. Results can be unpredictable, so maintain your diligence and resilience.
Life is Brief—Enjoy the Sweet Moments
My grandfather recently passed away at the age of 87, a reminder of life’s fleeting nature. If I am fortunate enough to live as long, I have roughly 50 years left. Shakespeare's Prospero reflects on life's brevity in "The Tempest," vowing to remember the inevitability of death.
While it’s wise to make healthy choices, don’t forget to relish life’s small pleasures. When offered a delicious cupcake, savor it! After all, you only live once.
