Finding Your Higher Power: A Journey through Spirituality

Chapter 1: Understanding Your Higher Power
What do you refer to as your Higher Power? It could be God, Allah, Buddha, or simply Love. Recently, I was inspired by a thought shared by Reverend Stephanie Sorensen: “When we love not, we judge. When we judge not, we love.” This profound statement truly resonated with me.
Reflecting on my own journey, I realize that my perception of God has shifted dramatically since engaging with the principles of Spirituality introduced by the AA Program. Previously, I envisioned God as a male figure with long hair and a beard, residing on a Golden Throne “up there in Heaven,” ready to judge and punish.
However, my understanding has evolved into viewing God as a loving force, one that genuinely desires my well-being—even in challenging circumstances like death or serious illness. I came to the realization that this divine presence isn't distant but exists within my own heart and spirit. Inspired by others, I decided to embrace this perspective.
By integrating this newfound wisdom with a “fake it till you make it” mindset, I soon discovered that I was not condemned by God but rather embraced and supported whenever I reached out, free from any conditions.
It wasn't long before my cravings for alcohol diminished. People I had previously judged harshly turned out to be kind and understanding. This experience taught me that to receive love, I must also give it. As I shared love, I found myself reaping the benefits of sobriety and spirituality in my daily life. Ultimately, I refer to my Higher Power as God.
The essential truth is that there is one God, regardless of the name used to describe it. Throughout history, diverse cultures have identified this Power with various names—God, Allah, Buddha, Lord, Jesus, Abbah, the Sun—and they all acknowledge a force greater than themselves.
We are all spiritual beings inhabiting a spiritual universe governed by spiritual laws. Our spiritual essence is constant; we simply are.
Instead of getting caught up in the terminology of this Power, why not simply recognize its presence and utilize it? I have chosen this path and find joy in life at every turn. The mere fact of my existence is a miracle, one I could never have achieved on my own, no matter my perceived strength.
While I may not find happiness in every circumstance around me, I am liberated from the chains of alcohol and other substances. This freedom allows me to approach life's challenges with clarity. I experience a state of happiness, joy, and freedom every day.
How do I maintain this state? By regularly applying the essence of the 3rd Step in both good and bad times. A simple “God, help me” proves invaluable in navigating difficult situations. Likewise, a heartfelt “Thank you, God” reinforces my positive outlook. Thank you, God!
