Chapter 1: The Impact of Technology on Our Lives

In today's fast-paced world, we often find ourselves caught in a whirlwind of distractions—be it notifications, endless browsing, or binge-watching shows. Our lives are heavily influenced by technology, dictating our daily routines from the moment we wake up until we go to sleep.

The significant amount of screen time we endure has severely diminished our attention spans, to the extent that concentrating on a single task for even ten minutes feels challenging. We flit from one platform to another in mere seconds, leaving little room for sustained focus.

What if there were a way to adjust this behavior to improve our lives without compromising our attention spans?

During the quarantine period, I discovered a technique to combat my smartphone dependency and limit its usage to essential tasks. Whenever I felt the urge to mindlessly scroll through my phone, I would pause and simply stare at a wall.

I dedicated about 5 to 10 minutes to this practice, and it provided a much-needed mental break from constant digital stimulation. As I noticed its beneficial effects, I gradually extended these sessions to a maximum of 15 minutes, which significantly helped me enhance my attention span.

What’s Actually Happening?

The underlying factor here is dopamine. The more we succumb to distractions, the more our brains crave them, creating a false sense of happiness. However, when we suddenly stop indulging in these distractions, we often experience boredom, which further diminishes our attention spans.
