Empowerment Over Value: A New Metric for Collaboration
Written on
Chapter 1: Understanding Collaborative Breakdowns
In the entrepreneurial world, even with the best efforts, certain projects may not yield the desired outcomes. As highlighted in last week's Insurgent Tip, issues between collaborators often stem from a lack of clear communication. When one party is a startup and the other a large corporation, the implications of these miscommunications can be quite uneven.
In the most unfortunate situations, such misunderstandings can escalate to lawsuits or disputes over finances. Clearly, avoiding such outcomes is essential. So, where should you begin in seeking solutions?
When a partnership fails to achieve its intended goals, it's crucial to reflect on how to rectify the situation. What can be done to mend relationships? How can we progress from here?
This Insurgent Tip aims to provide entrepreneurs with strategies to restore harmony after a collaboration has faltered.
Section 1.1: Empowerment as a Metric
Insurgent Tip: Prioritize Empowerment Instead of Value
It’s important to note that the approaches to resolving issues between two large corporations differ from those needed when mediating between a startup and an established firm. Our focus here is specifically on collaborations involving asymmetrically positioned organizations. In these cases, we believe that values-driven entities should emphasize empowerment over mere value.
To illustrate, let’s revisit a scenario discussed previously: a startup sought to develop new technology in partnership with a significant firm. Although the firm produced visually impressive work, the lack of effective communication hindered the project's success based on the initial goals.
In this instance, the firm did deliver value—undoubtedly in alignment with their charges. However, the startup was not equipped to leverage the value provided, leading to an unsatisfactory collaboration.
This experience, where significant funds were invested in a project that ultimately fell short due to miscommunication, has repercussions that extend beyond financial loss. It’s also about mending fractured relationships.
So, instead of concentrating solely on value, a more relevant inquiry is, "Are both parties able to move forward in an empowered manner?" or, "Did the client retain the ability to progress effectively?"
If you relate to either side of this situation, or if you’re the consultant facilitating the partnership, consider how your actions impact empowerment amidst these disparities. Reflect on these guiding questions as you strategize your next steps:
- Is the proposed solution focused on the value received, or on how empowered individuals are to advance?
- What disparities exist between the parties, and how should these be integrated into decision-making processes?
Section 1.2: Factoring Asymmetries in Collaboration
Asymmetries must be acknowledged in all decisions. Beyond the financial aspects—beyond the conventional value exchanges championed by capitalism—other forms of worth need consideration. Small startups, which often engage in groundbreaking work capable of addressing complex challenges, must be restored and empowered as much as possible following any breakdowns.
Ultimately, this concern extends beyond the two collaborating entities. It involves fostering initiatives that contribute to a better world.
This video introduces the Women's Empowerment Metric for National Statistical Systems, emphasizing the importance of measuring empowerment in various sectors.
Chapter 2: Advancing Collaborative Efforts
In this video, Joe Hudson discusses the importance of relinquishing control to empower both employees and children, fostering a culture of growth and independence.
By prioritizing empowerment, we create an environment where all parties can thrive, ultimately leading to more fruitful collaborations and a positive impact on society.
