Embracing Growth: My Writing Journey in Under 30 Days

Chapter 1: A Writer's Awakening

The journey to becoming a more skilled writer has been filled with challenges, yet nothing can deter my progress.

A focused individual writing in a notebook

Prior to committing to content creation, I was under the impression that I had a firm grasp on writing. Having not read a book in nearly two years, I believed I understood the essentials of being a writer. In reality, my knowledge was minimal.

After comparing my initial article, “We Didn’t Get the Memo: The Miseducation of Tipping in America,” with my more recent piece, “We Didn’t Get the Memo: The Miseducation of Tipping in America, Part 3,” the progress I've made in just 19 days is evident. I am determined to maintain this momentum.

I take great pride in the depth of my current writing, and I owe much of this growth to the publications and authors on Medium. I am particularly grateful to New Writers Welcome, which has provided a platform for my passion for writing to flourish. The dedicated editorial team has offered invaluable constructive feedback, essential for my development.

Wisdom, when accumulated, leads to profound knowledge.

The journey to improved writing begins with:

  1. A desire to learn.
  2. A commitment to writing regularly.

Following my article “Writing Short Stories Every Week: The Ray Bradbury Challenge,” my focus has shifted to enhancing my writing skills each day. Yes, I said daily.

Whether it involves picking up a book to absorb different writing styles or exploring a topic in multiple ways, take the plunge!

  1. Disconnect from distractions.

It's crucial to distance yourself from influences that disrupt your creative flow, such as negative people, household chaos, or unnecessary interruptions.

Living in a shared house in New Orleans with two roommates and two dogs, I often retreat to my room, immersing myself in music while I read or write—sometimes even doing both!

  1. Switch perspectives.

Once you’ve completed a piece, briefly transition from your writer’s mindset to that of a reader. This shift can provide fresh insights into your work, enhancing your writing style.

“Wisdom, when accumulated, leads to profound knowledge.” This personal mantra inspires me to continuously strengthen my writing abilities.

Accomplished Medium authors like Linda Caroll and Robert Ralph, who share valuable insights such as “26 Weak Words That Water Down Your Writing and How to Fix Them” and “How to Tag a Writer,” exemplify the dedication that seasoned writers have in mentoring newcomers on the Medium platform.

The journey is open for anyone ready to unlock their hidden talents. The key question is: Are you willing to be patient as you cultivate these skills? My motivation is rooted in a love for writing, not financial gain. Discover your niche, follow your path, and savor the experience.
