# Embracing Change: Can We Transform Beyond a Certain Age?

Chapter 1: The Myth of Age and Change

As 2023 draws to a close, a lingering question emerges: Is there a point in life where change becomes unattainable? Many believe that as we grow older, we become more entrenched in our habits and ways of thinking.

Once, a person I greatly admired remarked, “If you haven’t changed by 35, the chances are slim you will.” I was only 28 at the time.

I can’t recall the exact context in which I encountered her, but her interactions often felt emotionally distant. When I sought clarification on her responses, she explained that it was her way of giving back. With a son struggling with addiction, she had reached a point where she could no longer assist or enable him. If he chose to turn his life around, she would be there for him.

She never inquired about my well-being; her replies only came when I posed a question regarding life, relationships, or finances. While she maintained a certain distance, she consistently addressed my inquiries until one day when she declared that she felt she was no longer of help to me.

That was the last I heard from her. Her name was Erin Magee, a former alcoholic who transformed into a professional kayaker. During our exchanges, I was in a tumultuous phase of my life, grappling with a separation from my wife, excessive drinking, and an income that felt overwhelming.

Reflecting on that time, I wish to believe her assertion about the age of 35, but now at 48, I find myself far beyond that marker. Have I evolved since then? I’d like to think so, but that would be deceiving myself. The desire for change was always present; however, my actions did not follow suit. I lacked the necessary tools for transformation and was still in the process of acquiring them.

Two decades of self-destruction brought me to a point where I could finally begin to rebuild. The fact that I’m still here is a mystery, considering the often challenging path I’ve navigated, largely due to my own choices. At 28, I was not prepared; at 35, I still wasn’t. Even at 45, I found myself in a similar situation, needing to shed more layers and gather additional resources.

Now, at 48, I don’t feel at my best, but I sense that I have reached a turning point. This is a place I recognize all too well, and I’m exhausted—so very exhausted. It’s time for me to initiate my slow ascent.

Age is merely a number. When the moment arrives for change, it does. Sadly, some individuals may never reach that point. I thought I might be among them, but I’ve come to realize that I am ready.

As we usher in 2024, the journey of transformation begins.
