Embrace the Chaos: Finding Peace in Your To-Do List

Written on

Understanding the Overwhelming Nature of Modern Life

Have you ever felt overwhelmed by an endless list of tasks? In today’s fast-paced world, many of us find ourselves inundated with daily responsibilities we impose upon ourselves. Here’s a glimpse into the barrage of thoughts that often race through our minds:

  • Did you check your Twitter feed today?
  • What about your friends' stories on Instagram? You can’t miss those!
  • Are there any new videos from your favorite YouTube channels?
  • Did you catch up on the news today?
  • Don’t forget about Reddit!
  • What about the shows and movies on your watch list? Surely you can squeeze in another episode or two from yesterday's binge, right?
  • And let’s not forget about that book you bought ages ago. Has it really been that long?
  • Lastly, there’s the show your friend can’t stop raving about.

Just listing these has already created a sense of stress, making me wonder how I could possibly manage it all. How will I ever catch up? What about my other interests, hobbies, or side projects? With work or school consuming most of my time, it feels hopeless.

But does it have to be this way?

Recognizing the Pressure

The first step is acknowledgment: you’re the one applying this pressure on yourself. You’re not accountable to anyone else for neglecting these tasks. It’s solely your perception that insists you need to do everything—and that feeling of guilt when you don’t follow through is unwarranted.

Your personal list of obligations might differ from the examples I shared, but everyone has their own never-ending to-do list. I’m not suggesting you eliminate it entirely; instead, it’s crucial to recognize how many of these tasks are merely habits that aren’t essential.

Take a moment to breathe deeply.

Free Yourself from Update Addiction

Many of these endless tasks stem from what could be termed as "update addiction," our attempts to escape from reality. While these distractions can provide a temporary reprieve, they often lead to an overwhelming sense of obligation.

I'm not here to prescribe a rigid "millionaire daily routine" filled with early wake-up calls and exhaustive schedules. How you choose to spend your time is entirely up to you. If you find joy in your routine, that’s perfectly fine. However, it’s important to view these distractions in their true light. Skipping the latest tweets or videos won’t leave you behind in life.

What you can do is liberate yourself from the constant compulsion to keep up with things that exist only in your mind.

Making Peace with Your Backlog

Another significant issue arises from our perception of a massive backlog of tasks we feel obligated to complete. With hundreds of new movies, shows, and books released monthly, the list of things we haven’t yet experienced can feel insurmountable. Each time we review our lists, we often find new items to add, making it more likely that our “watch-list” will grow rather than shrink.

And that’s completely fine.

Your friend may have claimed a movie was a "once-in-a-lifetime experience," but everyone has their unique tastes, and what resonates with one person may fall flat for another. The only opinion that truly matters is your own.

You may recognize this scenario: while some shows linger on your watch list for years, a brand-new series might catch your attention, prompting you to binge-watch the entire season in just two days. There will always be captivating films and shows that elude your schedule, and it’s unrealistic to expect to complete your list.

Instead, find peace in the fact that when something truly piques your interest, you will make the time to enjoy it.

In Summary

  • You don’t need to catch up with everything.
  • Some items will always remain on your watch/read list.
  • You are not falling behind.
  • The only person you need to convince is yourself.

By liberating yourself from the constant pressure of catching up and fulfilling endless responsibilities, you’ll discover more time for everything else. Embracing a slower, yet productive day is a significant achievement in today’s world.

The first video, "You'll NEVER Finish Collecting Warhammer! - The Liam & Joe Show," explores the never-ending journey of collecting hobbies and the pressures that come with it.

The second video, "If you don't start where he finished you will never run well - Dan Mohler," emphasizes the importance of starting fresh rather than feeling burdened by what you haven’t completed.
