Chapter 1: The Role of Art in Our Lives

Art serves as a guiding light for those who cherish it. Throughout history, individuals have sought solace in creative works, which offer inspiration and a reprieve from the mundane.

We are surrounded by an abundance of songs, stories, visuals, and concepts, all waiting to be discovered. How often has a piece of art resonated with you personally? You may have shared a film, book, or music recommendation with your friends, only to be met with silence—no feedback, no engagement, just the sound of crickets.

What we choose to engage with—and the reasons behind those choices—affects artists, sensitive individuals, creatives, and their admirers.

The Connection We Overlook

It's a simple connection. Just a click or a voice command away lies a world of remarkable music, literature, and philosophy. It’s readily available, almost too easy to access, yet we frequently choose to look the other way.

I must admit, I am equally culpable! I've participated in workshops where attendees pay handsomely, yet they disregard the insights offered by others, including those of the instructor.

How many blogs, videos, and invitations do I overlook, claiming to be too busy? Sometimes, I truly am occupied; other times, I succumb to laziness or self-indulgence, lost in my own thoughts or watching clouds morph into whimsical shapes.

At times, I might feel a mix of forgetfulness and passive-aggressiveness. Occasionally, I am simply preoccupied with other matters, which keeps me from appreciating the incredible creativity around me. Yet, sometimes, there’s a subtle power dynamic at play: a refusal to be told what to appreciate!

Embracing Knowledge for Growth

Think of the oral traditions that have passed down stories, healing practices, ethics, and culture. Storytellers have always played a vital role in this transmission.

When my grandmother, Sandals Davidovitch (the infamous Davidovitch), immigrated, she pooled her limited resources with others to invite a "reader" to their cigar-rolling workshop, translating the day's news using a blend of languages and gestures. This highlights how much people valued language, ideas, and storytelling back then.

Art and literature are meant for everyone!

• The dedication of monks in their intricate calligraphy.
• Laws designed to keep enslaved people illiterate to maintain control.
• Immigrants who carry cherished books as heirlooms.

In eras before mass production, art and media were held in high regard. The stories and songs were treasured, even if they were straightforward and simple.

Today, many creatives seek attention and engagement, often feeling as though their efforts are unappreciated. The decline in the value of language, entertainment, and art is disheartening.

Why do we often neglect to engage with art?

Art and entertainment once held a rare quality that lent them a transient beauty, enhancing their impact, much like the ephemeral beauty of Buddhist sand paintings.

In this digital age, we are lured by the idea of a vast audience, yet the reality is that anyone can ignore our stories. We are also tempted by the notion of immortality, as seen in ancient cave paintings that have withstood the test of time. But to truly appreciate art, we must invest respect, time, attention, and compensation for creators. It's essential to initiate conversations about preserving our cultural heritage.
