Discovering My Core Values Through Friendship and Reflection

Written on

Chapter 1: The Visit That Sparked Self-Discovery

Recently, I embarked on a journey to uncover my core values. When my dear friend Vera flew in from the coast to visit me, it marked the first time she saw my new home. Having her familiar presence in this unfamiliar environment was incredibly comforting.

Vera is a truly delightful person, and our conversations are always enriching. During her visit, we camped in the desert and painted with watercolors, covering a multitude of fascinating topics: star-gazing, travel, astrology, tarot, and the essence of connection. However, the most impactful conversation revolved around our core values.

Section 1.1: Understanding Core Values

Although I had heard of core values before, I had never taken the time to explore my own. I had always assumed I knew myself well enough to identify what I wanted. Yet, Vera emphasized the importance of recognizing our values and how they shape our paths in life.

Vera explained that by living in alignment with her values, she felt more grounded and fulfilled. Inspired by this idea, I decided to explore my own values with her guidance.

Subsection 1.1.1: The Value Discovery Process

I categorized my values into four distinct areas:

  • Physical
  • Mental
  • Spiritual
  • Emotional

I reflected on the questions: "What do I love to do?" and "What matters to me?" For instance, my physical list included:

  • Traveling
  • Qigong
  • Hiking
  • Dancing
  • Gardening

This exercise allowed me to identify a common theme: a sense of vitality. When I asked Vera for her thoughts, she affirmed that valuing the feeling of being alive was indeed significant.

Section 1.2: Recognizing My Core Values

Through this process, I discovered four core values that resonate deeply with me:

  • Feeling Alive
  • Inspiration
  • Connection
  • Love

Each of these values emerged from the activities and passions that invigorate me.

Chapter 2: Implementing My Core Values

After identifying my core values, Vera shared that it was equally essential to incorporate them into my daily life. She practices her values every day, which helps her live with intention.

For example, dedicating even 20 minutes to Qigong fulfills my value of feeling alive. This practice connects me to my surroundings, enhancing my relationships and experiences. Connection breeds inspiration, and ultimately, that inspiration fuels my passion for writing.

Embracing my core values not only clarifies my path but also enriches my daily experiences.

Takeaway: A New Perspective on Fulfillment

In the week following this revelation, I found myself contemplating the simplicity of identifying and living my core values. I felt more content and less anxious as I checked in with myself daily.

I am thankful for Vera's influence and the positive impact she's made on my life. I once believed that I needed drastic changes to feel fulfilled, but I now realize that a simple daily practice of reflecting on these four values brings me the contentment I seek.

I encourage you to explore your own values. Create lists, identify themes, and you might be surprised by what you discover. What actions did you take today that align with your core values?
