Choosing the Right Name for Your Startup: What Really Matters

Written on

Understanding the Importance of a Name

The significance of selecting a name for your startup is often misunderstood.

I'm currently writing this on my iPad—quite amusing, isn't it? Perhaps not? If you're reading this on March 7, 2012, then you might recall the laughter surrounding the iPad's name after Steve Jobs unveiled it. I distinctly remember a sketch from Saturday Night Live humorously linking the iPad to a feminine hygiene product. Fast forward a decade, and here I am typing on one in a café, with no one making jokes anymore. It seems the name "iPad" has lost its punchline status.

I mention this because I recently named my own company, Autopest, an automated email follow-up tool powered by ChatGPT. Upon its launch, the name sparked a barrage of strong reactions. Many praised the concept but expressed reluctance to use a marketing tool with the term "pest" in it, fearing it would imply they were bothering their audience. A common refrain was that a name change could increase user engagement. This led me to question my choice: Was I deterring potential customers? Could a simple rename lead to success?

Reflecting on the iPad's journey reminded me that entrepreneurs often misjudge the true essence of naming their startups.

The Impact of Famous Startup Names

In my early entrepreneurial days, I was no different from those founders who grappled with selecting the perfect name. For my first four ventures, I spent at least a month agonizing over names. Ultimately, I believed I had chosen well, but none of those startups thrived, indicating that the names weren't the issue at hand.

Consider the names of some popular companies today. Take Amazon, for example. What connection does the name of a river in South America have with selling home goods or hosting websites? Yet, Amazon's unusual name hasn't hindered its success.

Or think about AirBnB. While the name might seem lackluster, it hasn't stopped people from using the service. I recall my mom confusing "AirBnB" with "airbinbee" while discussing a trip to Costa Rica—proof that even challenging names can gain traction.

Now, let’s look at Slack. Its name contradicts the very purpose for which customers use it; they want their teams to be productive, not slack off. If quirky names like these haven't impeded success, what truly matters when naming a startup?

The Role of Public Perception

A name's quality cannot be measured by an objective standard of "good" or "bad." What truly counts is whether people are discussing a company. For a product to be purchased, it must first be known.

A name is merely one component among many that influence its visibility. A catchy name alone cannot guarantee a company's success, nor can a poorly chosen name alone spell failure. The key lies in the value that a company offers. If a company with an unconventional name delivers real value, it will generate conversation, leading to familiarity with the name.

Therefore, the most crucial aspect of a startup's name isn't its perceived quality but whether it encourages discussion about the company. A "great" name may not always be one that fits perfectly. When was the last time you recommended a company solely based on its impressive name?

Interestingly, a name that seems trivial could be effective in sparking conversations. When people joked about the "iPad," struggled to pronounce "AirBnB," or expressed their hesitation to use "Autopest," it indicated that discussions were happening—free publicity in action. As Oscar Wilde wisely noted, "The only thing worse than being talked about is not being talked about."
