Cancel the Doomsday Clock: A Call to Action for Scientists

Chapter 1: Understanding the Doomsday Clock

Will someone please put an end to the Doomsday Clock? If you have nuclear capabilities, feel free to use them!

A representation of the Doomsday Clock

Looking at you, North Korea! Do the world a favor and direct your first missile towards those timid scientists who are so fearful of the future. My cynicism has reached its limit!

For anyone who isn't constantly doom-scrolling, there is a real "Doomsday Clock." This concept was conceived by Albert Einstein and several other scientists who contributed to the looming threat of nuclear catastrophe. When a group of concerned scientists wants to express their anxiety about the extinction of humanity, they shift the clock's hands closer to midnight, the time they predict nuclear disaster might strike.

Or perhaps it’s noon.

It's hard to say just by glancing at it.

It's not a digital clock; it’s analog.

And instead of numbers, it features charming polka dots. I wonder how many people under 30 can actually decipher it?

The point is, it’s an antiquated media event from a simpler era—back when people still cared about brave individuals flying across oceans in airplanes.

Now, it feels utterly absurd.

It’s merely another echo in the overwhelming noise targeting humanity.

Honestly, after surviving Three Mile Island, Chernobyl, and Fukushima, not to mention decades of above and below-ground tests, is “radiation” even among the top ten fatal threats we face? Why should anyone care about a potential “doomsday” that might happen someday? We should consider ourselves fortunate if it only takes one day to face the end!

Instead, we are mired in a slow and painful journey towards extinction. We take each terrible misstep on our chosen path with misguided bravery. We know the cliff is somewhere ahead “someday,” but like an addicted gambler, we revel in the thrill of our unchecked capitalism. Yes, the elephant in the room is the rampant greed of nearly everyone, but primarily the billionaires who are leading us to our demise—not the erratic leaders wielding nuclear weapons.

If you want a broad understanding of humanity's issues, just look from above. Humanity resembles a virus, driven by greed and the relentless pursuit of survival at any cost, rather than seeking a harmonious relationship with our environment. This is humanity consuming itself, reducing everything to nothingness, even engaging in cannibalism if necessary.

Dear Scientists, your clock is a feeble attempt to soothe our fears of apocalypse and nothingness.

What we truly need is an hourglass to symbolize our prolonged suffering.

An hourglass that drips sand so slowly that each grain is almost imperceptible. Each grain represents a species lost forever,

a rare resource extracted from the Earth,

or a part of the atmosphere that can no longer cool.

Scientists often claim there are more stars in the sky than grains of sand on a beach. Yet, this should remind us that there is still a finite amount of sand. While clocks can tick indefinitely, marking time endlessly, an hourglass eventually runs out, usually when no one is paying attention. Its time is limited. So is ours.

As we continue to exhaust this planet, is anyone paying attention?

So, dear scientists, humanity will not meet its end in a glorious blaze at midnight while we slumber.

We are already on the brink of death,

seemingly in a coma but vaguely aware of our decline. We rely on you, dear scientists, for practical solutions—not philosophical musings.

To be blunt, your clock is an excuse for the work you ought to be doing.

You created the Doomsday Clock to raise awareness in hopes that politicians would act. That was your first failure. Science should guide politicians, not the other way around.

After the first bomb was dropped on Hiroshima, the responsibility of saving the world became YOUR burden—not the public's, the politicians', or even the billionaires'. They are merely intermediaries for your ideas if they can find a buyer. No, the responsibility to fix our world lies with science. Solutions are your domain, so own it and take action. Do something you haven’t done in far too long.

In a word… LEAD!

Discover a better way to sustain humanity without billionaires and politicians mediating our suffering. So far, the best application of your costly science has benefited the fewest people. The only thing these intermediaries want from you is the means to increase their own power. They seek immortality, wanting to be the last superhuman standing at the end of time.

The public can no longer endure this.

You must abandon your service to the elite.

Quit your positions with billionaires now.

Gather yourselves and start working for the people once again. Stop pursuing wealth, book deals, and prestige while professing the importance of science to all humanity.

BE important to all humanity NOW!

If you work for Twitter or other tech giants, leave and help hold billionaires accountable.

If you’re employed by an oil company, innovate ways to make geothermal energy cheaper than fossil fuels.

If you’re in Big Pharma, shift your focus to genuine cures rather than lifetime “treatments.”

If you’re developing GMOs, lobby for government subsidies for organic farming!

If you’re engineering “carbon capture” systems, advocate for tree planting subsidies!

Bad science is rampant, and it’s your fault, scientists. Just because you can do something doesn’t mean it truly benefits anyone at all. Step away from the media spotlight.

Scientists should leave the PR work to politicians and other media entities. The world needs solutions to pressing problems more than anything else. You need to find more meaningful projects than chasing profits and billionaire shelters.

Do you know what Einstein is most remembered for? It’s not that damn clock. No, Einstein is known for helping the U.S. develop nuclear weapons when there was a pressing need to confront evil. At that time, it was the necessary action to address a monumental problem. It required total commitment from scientists worldwide to help eliminate fascism with a single devastating bomb.

And it worked. But it still took two bombs to bring fascism to its knees.

Dear Scientists, you must do this again. You haven’t even made the attempt once, and now we face multiple crises. This time, focus on climate change and the myriad other ways we are eating ourselves into oblivion. We need you to foster harmony among ourselves and with what remains of the natural world.

Science. The most brilliant minds. Whatever.

What legacy did Stephen Hawking leave behind? A foreboding of doom, warnings about larger black holes, and more alarms instead of genuine solutions. Thank you, Stephen Hawking. No one will recall your contributions if all that remains is a scorched Earth surrounded by luxury space stations occupied by lifeless billionaires.

Dear Science. Enough with the warnings. Enough with the theatrics. Enough with science that serves only those who need nothing more. Take action. Change the world TODAY. Use your abilities for good once again. Have the courage to refuse to work for billionaires from this point forward. Organize and tell them to go away until they start caring about the rest of us and not just their own families and bunkers! Give us hope. Ensure that the world will survive well past midnight (or noon) and until the sun rises once more.

Save us, once again, please.
