Avoiding the Pitfall of Monetary Motivation in Writing

The Journey of a New Writer

This morning, as I lay in bed, my thoughts drifted to what I wanted to express in this article. Before those thoughts slipped away, I decided to put pen to paper, so to speak.

As a novice writer, I am currently exploring the craft primarily for enjoyment. This newfound creative outlet has brought me a sense of fulfillment. However, during my initial research into the writing world, I was easily swayed by various advice focusing on monetizing my writing. It's a bit embarrassing to admit that I allowed the allure of money to guide me. Call it human instinct, temptation, or even greed; I veered off course, fixating on profit instead of the art of writing itself.

Who am I to think my words can entertain others? At my age, nearing retirement in my 60s, I possess a wealth of life experiences to share. Yet, the thought of selling my musings felt absurd. I have come to the realization that I should prioritize the joy of writing and honing my skills. If, in the future, I create work that others deem worthy of purchasing, then perhaps I will consider it.

At this point in my journey, what I'm doing now—writing personal reflections on my laptop and sharing them on Medium—is genuinely enjoyable. The positive feedback I've received has been encouraging. I appreciate the idea of being a developing writer and seeing where this path leads.

While the pursuit of financial success is a prevalent topic online, I am choosing to distance myself from that and concentrate on writing for my own satisfaction. With so many writers on Medium, I hope this brief article helps me connect with others who share a similar passion for writing purely for enjoyment.
