# Apple’s iPad Lineup: Disappointing Changes and Price Hikes

Written on

Introduction to Apple's iPad Updates

Rather than hosting a highly anticipated public event in October, Apple chose to unveil its iPad updates solely on its website. After examining these new iPads, it becomes evident why no event was held; the updates are quite underwhelming. It's hard to imagine anyone at Apple wanting to face the public after witnessing the disappointment surrounding these new devices. As we await the upcoming Mac announcements next month, let’s explore what Apple modified, what was detrimental, and how they managed to raise prices despite the lackluster offerings.

What’s New in the iPad Lineup?

If you haven't yet visited Apple's website, here's a brief overview of the changes made to the new iPads. Apple revealed upgrades for three different models. The standard iPad received its 10th generation upgrade, which, while not terrible, certainly fell short of expectations. Additionally, the iPad Pro was updated, but surprisingly, these more expensive models received the least impressive enhancements—contrary to Apple's usual pattern of providing substantial upgrades for premium devices.

New iPad Pro models

Let's begin with the iPad Pro, which saw a minor upgrade that everyone anticipated: the inclusion of the new M2 chip announced earlier this year. Many trusted sources had reported that this would be a significant year for the iPad Pro line, with expectations for a major redesign, wireless charging capabilities, and Mini-LED technology for the 11-inch model. Unfortunately, none of these features materialized, leaving the M2 chip as the only new addition to an otherwise unchanged design.

The standard iPad, on the other hand, did receive some notable improvements. The 10th generation features a redesigned look that removes the home button and increases the screen size. This model is now available in four different colors. The internal chip has been upgraded to the A14, and the rear camera has been enhanced from 8 MP to 12 MP. Furthermore, the new iPad now supports USB-C connectivity and offers 5G capabilities, making it more versatile.

Disappointments and Oversights

While both iPads are better than their predecessors, especially the standard model, the overall lack of detail is where Apple fell short. For instance, while the transition from a Lightning port to USB-C is commendable, Apple failed to introduce new Apple Pencils compatible with this change. Instead, they opted for an impractical adapter that connects the first-generation Apple Pencil to the new iPad, requiring additional steps to charge the device.

A new keyboard Folio for the more affordable 10th generation iPad has been announced, featuring a new row of function keys akin to those found on Macs—a valuable addition for new users. However, the iPad Pro's keyboard remains unchanged, even though it caters to a more professional user base who could benefit from these new features.

The Pricing Dilemma

Now, let’s address the pricing issue, where the situation truly deteriorates. Although the new iPad is indeed improved, it does not justify the inflated costs. The starting price for the 64GB WiFi version is now $449, up from $329—a $120 increase. The cellular model has seen an even steeper rise, with an additional $140 added to its price tag.

In some regions, such as the UK, the price hike is even more pronounced. The 10th generation iPad costs £180 more than its predecessor, complicating the choice for those seeking an entry-level device. The iPad Air's price has also increased, now costing £669 instead of £569 for the same model, and the iPad Mini has seen a £90 rise in price.

Previously, the keyboard for the 9th-generation iPad was priced at $159, but it is no longer compatible with the new model. Instead, users must purchase the new keyboard Folio for $249.

Conclusion: A Missed Opportunity

At this juncture, I find myself disappointed. It appears that Apple has dropped the ball, or at the very least, could have executed these updates far better. The iPads seem to have taken a backseat this year, receiving a lackluster upgrade and no event to showcase them, as Apple seems more focused on other priorities.

We can only hope that next month's Mac announcements will be more satisfying than these iPad updates.
